Silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) is the main byproducts of the polysilicon industries. The dissolution behaviors of SiCl4 in imidazolium ionic liquid, including [Bmim]OTf, [Bmim]NTf2, [Hmim]NTf2, and [Omim]NTf2, were investigated for recycling Si from SiCl4. Raman spectroscopy was used to understand the combination between the ionic liquid and SiCl4, and the conductivity of ionic liquids in different conditions was determined. The results indicated that [Bmim]NTf2 exhibited a better SiCl4 dissolving capacity compared to [Bmim]OTf, longer alkyl chain lengths in the imidazolium cations of the ionic liquids exhibited a better performance in dissolving SiCl4, and [Bmim]NTf2 : PC = 1 : 2 exhibited the best conductivity. In addition, molecular bondings between C-Cl, Si-O-Si, and C-Si were formed between the ionic liquids and SiCl4.

During machining, the cutting fluids play an essential role in cooling and lubrication. In order to reduce the friction forces, the excessive amount of the cutting fluids are generally used. This, in turn, leads to wastage of the cutting fluids which results in a serious impact on the environment, health and cost of production. Therefore, the judicious use of lubricants is the foremost concern in the manufacturing industry. In order to mitigate these drawbacks, various alternatives have been developed in the last decade. In the present paper, ionic liquids have been proved as favourable sustainable alternative additives in the base oil. The effect of alkyl chain length of ionic liquids with base oil on the thermo-physical and tribological characteristics of cutting fluids including viscosity, wettability, anticorrosion behaviour, thermal stability, and coefficient of friction have been analysed. In the present study, pyrrolidinium and hexafluoro-phosphate (PF6) have been used as cation and anion, respectively, with rice bran oil as base oil. The five different ionic liquids have been dispersed in base oil by 1.0 wt%. It has been found that longer alkyl chain length showed the favourable results as compared to the shorter one. Results indicated that ionic liquid based cutting fluid attained ample enhanced thermophysical and tribological properties as compared to the neat rice bran oil. There has been 5.08% and 4.29% improvement in viscosity and thermal conductivity for IL4 + RBO in comparison to neat RBO. In addition, the wettability, coefficient of friction, and wear volume have been reduced by 20.34%, 53.79% and 57.87% correspondingly.

N,N-diethyl-N-(2-methancryloylethy)-N-methylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide polymer (DEMM-TFSI) brush coated specimens (substrate: glasses) and a liquid ion type of polymer brush coating were investigated for their antifouling effect on biofilms. Biofilms were produced by two kinds of bacteria, E. coli and S. epidermidis. They were formed on specimens immersed into wells (of 12-well plates) that were filled with culture liquids and bacteria. The biofilm formation was observed. Also, brush coated specimens and glass substrates were investigated in the same way. DEMM polymer brush coated specimens formed more biofilm than PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) polymer brush coated specimens and glass substrates. A greater amount of polarized components of biofilms was also observed for DEMM polymer brush coated specimens. The polar characteristics could be attributed to the attraction capability of bacteria and biofilms on DEMM polymer brush coated specimens. When considering the ease of removing biofilms by washing it with water, the ionic liquid type polymer brush (coated specimens) could be used for antifouling applications. If an initial antifouling application is needed, then the polar characteristics could be adjusted (design of the components and concentrations of ionic liquids, etc.) to solve the problem.

These complexes are easy to prepare, inexpensive, water stable, and soluble in ionic liquids, making them viable candidates for use as oxidation catalysts.

Ionic liquids are exceptional chemical compounds that are used in many areas of modern science. Due to their highly adjustable nature and incomparable properties, ionic liquids have become key players in the areas of synthesis, catalysis, extraction, electrochemistry, analysis, biotechnology, etc. In addition to the physical and chemical properties of ionic liquids, their high biological activity has attracted considerable attention from biochemists, ecologists and medical professionals. Due to the properties mentioned above, an imidazolium ionic liquid solvent was used for the synthesis of nanostructure nanoparticles. In the present work, cubic form of pure Fe2O3, spherical nature of pure Ag (0) and hexagonal shaped hybrid Ag- Fe2O3 were successfully synthesized by a simple co-precipitation, reduction and co-precipitation processes. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized in detail by spectral studies such as IR, XRD, SEM, EDX and TEM analysis. The size and shape of the particles were performed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) techniques and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) techniques. Quality quantity and purity of the products was checked by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX).

Abstract This study was performed to validate the previous antimicrobial and cytotoxic data on the influence of ionic liquids as coatings of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The antibacterial and cytotoxicity assessments were carried out against different microorganisms and a cancerous cell line. AgNPs with two different ionic-liquid coatings and hydrocarbon chains were synthesized and characterized. We tested the antibacterial activity of these NPs against Salmonella typhi, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans in planktonic forms and against Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli in biofilm forms. MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay was employed for toxicity evaluation. The antimicrobial activity of NPs with 12 carbons was significantly higher than those with 18 carbons. Furthermore, NPs with 12 carbons were also effective against bacterial biofilms. All of the NPs tested had good cell viability at different antimicrobial concentrations. The length of the hydrocarbon chain is an essential factor in determining the antimicrobial activity of ionic-liquid-coated AgNPs. The variation in ionic-liquid coatings was not as effective as other influencing factors. Evaluation of AgNPs using other alkyl chain lengths to find the optimal size is recommended.

The growing interest in the use of ionic liquids may soon result in their presence in the environment. In any evaluation of the environmental fate of these compounds, their sorption on soil is an essential parameter. This paper reports data on the sorption of ionic liquids on selected soils and marine sediments. Batch-equilibrium adsorption tests were conducted on a selection of imidazolium ionic liquid entities. All the compounds were strongly sorbed on all the soils under study. It seems that, regardless of the hydrophobic interaction with organic matter, non-hydrophobic interactions contribute to the sorption of these compounds to soils and sediments, which usually tends to occur with highly polar ionized groups such as quaternary moieties.
