AbstractMethods to form magnetic nanoparticle monolayers using non-aqueous Langmuir layers are reported. Following a discussion of the driving forces in various self-assembly techniques, we describe how aqueous Langmuir layers can be modified for use in conjunction with oxidationsensitive nanoparticles. Monolayers are formed using Fe and–Co nanoparticles, and transferred to carbon-coated transmission electron microscopy grids using the Langmuir-Schaefer method.

In the present work, oxidation of alkenes with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of meso-tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrinatoiron(III) chloride supported onto surface of functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (FMWCNT), [ Fe ( THPP ) Cl@MWCNT ], is reported. The simple heterogeneous catalyst was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and also thermal analysis. The amount of the catalyst loaded on the nanotubes was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. This heterogeneous catalyst proved to be an efficient and green catalyst and was successfully able to activate hydrogen peroxide without any additive toward the oxidation of alkenes in ethanol as a green solvent. Performance of the catalyst in oxidation of various alkenes was inspected under reflux, ultrasonic irradiation and mechanical stirring. Moreover, the catalyst can be reused several times under similar conditions.

A series of Fe3+-dopped polyaniline (Fe3+/PANI) nanomaterials with different morphologies and a higher conductivity were successfully synthesized using a simple and static interfacial polymerization by using FeCl3 as both oxidant catalyst and dopant. The effect of surfactants CTAB and SDS and the concentration of FeCl3 on the morphology and conductivity of Fe3+/PANI nanomaterial were investigated. The samples were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), SDY-4 probes conductivity meter, X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy techniques. TEM’s results showed that their morphologies changed with the type of the surfactant and the concentration of FeCl3. Introducing surfactants CTAB and SDS into Fe3+/PANI remarkably improved the conductivity of the material. The conductivities of CTAB/Fe3+/PANI and SDS /Fe3+/PANI nanomaterials were respectively about 4.8×10-2 and 1.3×10-2 S/cm while the conductivity of Fe3+/PANI was found to be 1.5×10-4 S/cm. The different morphology and high conductivity may be ascribed to the mutual effects of the surfactant and oxidant.

Bioflocculant from Alcaligenis faecalis HCB2 was used in the eco-friendly synthesis of the copper nanoparticles. Nanoparticles were characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-visible spectroscopy, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The transmission electron microscopy images showed close to spherical shapes with an average particle size of ∼53 nm. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of the Cu nanopartilces and also the other elements such as O, C, P, Ca, Cl, Na, K, Mg, and S originated from the bioflocculant. FT-IR results showed the presence of the –OH and –NH2 groups, aliphatic bonds, amide and Cu–O bonds. Powder X-ray diffraction peaks confirmed the presence of (111) and (220) planes of fcc structure at 2 of 33° and 47° respectively with no other impurity peaks.

Spinel CoFe2O4 nano-particles were synthesized by hydrothermal traditionally and Ethylene Glycol (EG) assisted hydrothermal process originally. The effects of reaction temperatures from 140°C to 200°C, different OH- provider and EG/water ratio on the nano-particles’ structure, morphology and magnetic properties of composition were studied by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The possible mechanism for the effects on the properties was also discussed in details. The results showed that NaAC as OH- provider and higher EG/water ratio in solvent were benefit for getting smaller CoFe2O4 nano-particles. And existence of EG is also important to remove the α-Fe2O3 phase.

ABSTRACTTargeting to develop E21 Co3AlC based heat resistant alloys, phase stability of E21 Co3AlC and (Co, Ni)3AlC has been investigated together with the magnetic properties of E21’ Co3AlC0.5 which is formed by the extra ordering of carbon atoms accompanying anti-phase boundary (APB). The correlation of ferromagnetism with APB in E21’ Co3AlC0.5 was evaluated using single crystals by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer. Anti-phase domain (APD) size affects the ferromagnetism: for instance, the saturation magnetization becomes larger as the APD size is smaller. Local atomic configuration at APB was clearly observed by HRTEM image.

ABSTRACTZinc peroxide (ZnO2) nanocrystals were directly produced by hydrothermal process. The nanocrystals were synthesized using zinc acetate as precursor and hydrogen peroxide as oxidant agent. The ZnO2 powders were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results of transmission electron microscopy indicated that the ZnO2powders consisted of nanocrystals with diameters below to 20 nm and a faceted morphology. High resolution electron microscopy observations have been used in order to the structural characterization. ZnO2 nanocrystals exhibit a well-crystallized structure.

ABSTRACTNano-graphite oxide has been synthesized from graphite flakes using modified Hummer’s method. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) data, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed functionalization of the synthesised nano-graphitic platelets with oxygenated bonds. Using thermal embedding technique for the fabrication of self-assembled films, electrodes of nano-graphite oxide have been fabricated for enzyme free detection of cholesterol electrochemically. The electrodes provided a linear response for the enzyme less detection in the range of 50mg/dl to 500mg/dl with a correlation coefficient, R, of 0.99784 and sensitivity of 1.0587 µA/mg.
