Several serious problems such as material durability and fouling in the High Temperature Heat Exchanger (HTEH) for Externally Fired Micro Gas Turbines (EFMGT) cause the low thermal efficiency. In this study for increasing the thermal efficiency, a duct around a cylindrical fixed bed combustor which burns wood pellets is proposed and two different designs, empty and porous material filled, are investigated. A heat transfer model, based on coupling between radiative and convective modes at the combustor and duct sides is developed to evaluate the important geometrical parameters in the different designs. The predicted results for the empty duct show that although an increase of the combustion length increases the temperature of air at the duct outlet, an increase of the combustor diameter is more effective. In addition, an increase of the duct cross section is the most effective way and according to the predictions, the pressure drop in this case is still acceptable. The porous duct design shows a significant increase in the air temperature at the duct outlet. However, the pressure drop is high. The investigation shows the possibility of reduction of the pressure drop with the same amount of heat transfer by selecting suitable particle size and porosity.

5A zeolite supported Gold-Palladium (Au-Pd) bimetallic were prepared and used in vapor phase oxidation of ethylene to synthetize vinyl acetate (VA). The chemical composition of Au-Pd/5A zeolite catalyst was analyzed by a combination of atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The structure of Au-Pd/5A zeolite catalyst was characterized by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The catalytic activity of the Au-Pd/5A zeolite catalyst under laboratory conditions were investigated in vinyl acetate synthesis by a kind of the fixed bed reaction device. The AAS testing showed that Au and Pd supported rate were increased up to the optimum value 91.22% and 93.91% respectively at the ratio of Au/Pd=0.87. The SEM analysis results indicated that Au-Pd alloy particles of 5A zeolite catalyst can grown up and reunited obviously through before and after reaction. The XRD analysis results showed that diffraction peak of Pd (111), Pd (200), Au (111) and Au (200) became sharp gradually with the extension of reaction time, crystalline phase composition and grain size of catalyst became bigger gradually. The results about catalytic activity of the Au-Pd/5A zeolite catalyst shown that with the increasing of the Au/Pd ratio, the space-time yield and selectivity have a best value respectively; when the ratio of Au/Pd=0.87, the space-time yield were 702g/(Lh) and the selectivity were 92.8% at the ratio of Au/Pd =1.13.

Abstract Experiments on a confined fluidized bed system with various shapes of particles have been presented in the paper. Its influence on hydrodynamic properties in the whole range of gas velocity has been analysed. Relations allowing calculation of the Richardson-Zaki-type equation coefficients, including description of inter-particle void and gas pressure drop in such systems have been determined. Necessary condition for confined fluidization of non-spherical coarse particles has also been determined.
