The mechanical properties of glass and wax particle-filled myofibrillar protein gels were characterized based on filler size and surface effects. Increases in elastic moduli were explained using established models describing particle-filled networks.

AbstractOne of the major benefits of the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) technology is the possibility of fabrication of complex geometries and features in only one-step of production. In the case of heat exchangers in particular, this is very convenient for the fabrication of conformal cooling channels which can improve the performance of the heat transfer capability. Yet, obtaining dense copper parts printed via LPBF presents two major problems: the high reflectivity of 1 μm (the wavelength of commonly used laser sources) and the high thermal conductivity of copper that limits the maximum local temperature that can be attained. This leads to the formation of porous parts.In this contribution, the influence of the particle size distribution of the powder on the physical and mechanical properties of parts produced via LPBF is studied. Three copper powders lots with different particle size distributions are used in this study. The effect on densification from two laser scan parameters (scan speed and hatching distance) and the influence of contours scans on the lateral surface roughness is reported. Subsequently, samples manufactured with the optimal process parameters are tested for thermal and mechanical properties evaluation.

Abstract In this paper, the hydraulic sedimentary model was established to investigate the effects of dry beach slope on the sedimentary characteristics of tailings, and the sand column model was built to investigate the effects of seepage erosion on the physical and mechanical properties of sedimentary tailings under unsteady seepage.The results show that the slope of dry beach have a great effect on the sedimentary characteristics of tailings, the average particle size of tailings decreases along the slope of dry beach, and the larger the slope, the more obvious the stratification of the tailings. The migration of fine-grained tailings caused by seepage erosion increases the permeability of the tailings and reduces the shear strength of the tailings. After seepage erosion,the average particle size of 1#tailings sample, 2#tailings sample and 3#tailings sample increased by 6.4%, 12.0% and 2.4% respectively, the hydraulic conductivity of 1# tailings sample, 2# tailings sample and 3# tailings increased by 27.2%,17.9%, and 15.3% respectively after internal erosion, and the shear strength of 1#tailings sample, 2#tailings sample and 3#tailings sample tailings sample decreased by 20.9 %, 15.1% and 12.4% respectively.

Studying physical and mechanical properties of limestone cement pastes blended by TiO2 nanoparticles (i.e., particle size less than 100 nm). Three mixes are prepared for this study (5.00, 10.00 and 25.00 wt. % of limestone) partially replaced cement/clinker by TiO2 nanoparticles. Fillers are carefully selected which reinforcing cement workability or water retention they could be inert or have slightly hydraulic properties. Limestone is most common filler that fills the pores between cement particles due to the formation of monocarboaluminate, while nanoparticles increase the hydration C-S-H gel product and calcium titanium silicate which hardened the cement pastes. Nanoparticles show a great effect in reinforcing the mechanical strength of cement pastes due to the fact that TiO2-nanoparticles act as active nuclei site forming C-S-H gel observed as honeycomb-like plus improving cement to water demined (W/C) ratio. SEM analysis proves that the morphology of cement structure is well arranged and compacted.

NiTi shape memory alloys have attracted significant interest due to their unique superelasticity and high damping performance. In this work, the effect of SiC particle size on both physical and mechanical properties of NiTi matrix composite was investigated. Ni and Ti powders with particle sizes of 40 µm were used with the SiC addition with varying particle sizes of 20 µm and 40 µm, respectively. Composites of NiTi with 1wt. % SiC were fabricated by powder metallurgy technique. The effects of SiCp addition on hardness, relative density and wear behavior of NiTi composites have been investigated. The samples were examined by scanning electron microscope, for microstructural studies and phase development. The results showed that the distribution of the reinforced particle was uniform. Moreover, as the SiC particle size decreases, hardness and wear resistance increase. It was demonstrated that SiC particle size significantly enhanced the wear resistance of NiTi composite.
