A series of oligofluorenes bearing 3,6-dipyrenylcarbazoles as the terminal substituents showed strong blue emission with good solubility, and thermally stable amorphous and excellent film-forming properties. OLEDs using these materials exhibited excellent device performance.

The synthesis and characterisation of 2,5-bis(5′-hexyl-[2,2′-bithiophen]-5-yl)pyridine (Th4PY) and its use as a blue emitter in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) is reported. Th4PY was synthesised in high yield using a straightforward Suzuki coupling route with commercially available starting materials. As Th4PY is both soluble and has low molecular weight, blue OLEDs were fabricated using both spin-coating and vacuum deposition thin film processing techniques to study the effect of processing on device performance. OLED devices using a spin-coated layer consisting of 4′,4′′-tris(N-carbazolyl)triphenylamine (TCTA) and 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) as a host matrix together with Th4PY as emitter exhibited highly efficient sky-blue emission with a low turn-on voltage of 3 V, a maximum brightness close to 15000 cd m–2 at 8 V, and a maximum luminous efficiency of 7.4 cd A–1 (6.3 lm W–1) with CIE coordinates of x = 0.212, y = 0.320. The device performance characteristics are compared using various matrices and processing techniques. The promising sky-blue OLED performance, solution processability, and ambient stability make Th4PY a promising blue emitter for application in OLEDs.

AbstractTwo new D-π-A chromophores composed of an electron-donating carbazole unit linked through π- bridges, bearing 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) moiety, with an electron withdrawing dicyanovinyl group (DCV) were successfully synthesized involving Suzuki or Heck cross-coupling and Knöevenagel reactions as the key steps. The obtained compounds absorb light over a broad spectral range, including the visible spectrum. The HOMO/LUMO energies and band gap energy values (Eg) were calculated on the basis of the experimental optical and electrochemical data: HOMO, LUMO, Eg (eV), −5.51, −3.14, 2.37 (4), −5.34, −3.14, 2.20 (7). The presence of the HC=CH unit in compound 7 resulted in the increase of the HOMO energy level, the decrease of a band gap value and red shifts of the absorption and emission bands in comparison with those of 4. Large Stokes shifts and broadband luminescence inherent to both chromophores suggest their use as materials for luminescent solar collectors (LSCs). The obtained compounds demonstrated good solubility and suitable thin-film forming properties. For this reason, they may be suitable for solution-processable photovoltaic applications.

The upconversion (UC) luminescence properties of phosphor Tm3+/Yb3+co-doped Gd2Mo3O9were investigated in detail. Tm3+/Yb3+co-doped Gd2Mo3O9was prepared by solid-state reaction method using Na2CO3as flux and characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry. Under 980nm excitation, Tm3+/Yb3+co-doped Gd2Mo3O9has exhibited a weak red emission near 651nm and strong blue emission at 476nm. Tm3+/Yb3+co-doped Gd2Mo3O9phosphor has been considered as a better candidate in solid-state lighting applications.
