Oxygen reduction reaction-favoring PtPdAg hollow nanoparticle, nanodimer and nanowire catalysts are synthesized, all of which have been demonstrated to be promoting factors for the ORR. PtPdAg/C nanodimers exhibit excellent performance for the ORR with the highest mass activity.

The Pt particles within diameters of 1–3 nm known as Pt nanoclusters (NCs) are widely considered to be satisfactory oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts due to higher electrocatalytic performance and cost effectiveness. However, the utilization of such smaller Pt NCs is always limited by the synthesis strategies, stability and methanol tolerance of Pt. Herein, unprotected Pt NCs (~2.2 nm) dispersed on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared via a modified top-down approach using liquid Li as a solvent to break down the bulk Pt. Compared with the commercial Pt/C, the resultant Pt NCs/CNTs catalyst (Pt loading: 10 wt.%) exhibited more desirable ORR catalytic performance in 0.1 M HClO4. The specific activity (SA) and mass activity (MA) at 0.9 V for ORR over Pt NCs/CNTs were 2.5 and 3.2 times higher than those over the commercial Pt/C (Pt loading: 20 wt.%). Meanwhile, the Pt NCs/CNTs catalyst demonstrated more satisfactory stability and methanol tolerance. Compared with the obvious loss (~69%) of commercial Pt/C, only a slight current decrease (~10%) was observed for Pt NCs/CNTs after the chronoamperometric measurement for 2 × 104 s. Hence, the as-prepared Pt NCs/CNTs material displays great potential as a practical ORR catalyst.

In this work, non-traditional metal-free polynitrogen chain N8− deposited on a nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (PN-NCNT) catalyst was successfully synthesized by a facile cyclic voltammetry (CV) approach, which was further tested in an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The formation of PN on NCNT was confirmed by attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. Partial positive charge of carbon within NCNT facilitated electron transfer and accordingly induced the formation of more PN species compared to CNT substrate as determined by temperature-programmed decomposition (TPD). Rotating disk electrode (RDE) measurements suggested that a higher current density was achieved over PN-NCNT than that on PN-CNT catalyst, which can be attributed to formation of the larger amount of N8− on NCNT. Kinetic study suggested a four-electron pathway mechanism over PN-NCNT. Moreover, it showed long stability and good methanol tolerance, which indicates its great potential application. This work provides insights on designing and synthesizing non-traditional metal-free catalysts for ORR in fuel cells.

Ag doping is one of the best methods for improving the catalytic activity of LaMnO3 perovskites, and the mass specific activity of LAM-30 (La0.7Ag0.3MnO3) can reach 48.0 mA mg−1 which is about 32 times that of LAM-0 (LaMnO3).
