For the first time, transfer hydrogenation of quinolines and related heterocycles is performed with a non-noble metal based catalyst. [Co(BF4)2·6H2O] in combination with phosphine L1 catalyses selectively, the mild reduction of N-heteroarenes using formic acid as hydrogen donor.

A catalytic system comprised of a cobalt-diphosphine complex and a Lewis acid (LA) such as AlMe3 has been found to promote hydrocarbofunctionalization reactions of alkynes with Lewis basic and electron-deficient substrates such as formamides, pyridones, pyridines, and azole derivatives through site-selective C-H activation. Compared with known Ni/LA catalytic system for analogous transformations, the present catalytic system not only feature convenient set up using inexpensive and bench-stable precatalyst and ligand such as Co(acac)3 and 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp), but also display distinct site-selectivity toward C-H activation of pyridone and pyridine derivatives. In particular, a completely C4-selective alkenylation of pyridine has been achieved for the first time. Mechanistic stidies including DFT calculations on the Co/Al-catalyzed addition of formamide to alkyne have suggested that the reaction involves cleavage of the carbamoyl C-H bond as the rate-limiting step, which proceeds through a ligand-to-ligand hydrogen transfer (LLHT) mechanism leading to an alkyl(carbamoyl)cobalt intermediate.

In the present study, Iron-based FeMnAlNi and Cobalt-based CoNiGa shape-memory alloys (SMA) were processed by laser metal deposition for the first time. The materials show susceptibility to cracking upon processing when unheated substrates are employed. Pre-heating of the substrate materials eliminated cracking completely and enabled robust deposition of thin-wall structures. Microstructural analysis using optical microscopy revealed different microstructural evolution for the two materials considered.

Lewis acid-mediated one-pot tandem cyclization of o-QMs with arylsulfonyl hydrazides was described for the first time and the corresponding 3-sulfonylbenzofuran products were obtained in moderate to good yields.

Many long-known but never-quantified properties in chapters of general chemistry have for the first time been quantitatively compared and consistently unified, using the newly introduced geometro-wave (GW) potential of particles (i.e. atoms, molecules, clusters, ions, and nanoparticles). Th GW Potential has helped update the electrochemistry, Lewis acid-base chemistry, redox chemistry, self-assembly, surface chemistry, catalysis, and inter-nanoparticle bonding.

Stilbenes substituted with –CN, –OMe and –Br were synthesized using four different Lewis acid catalysts and their reaction efficiencies were compared. In addition to McMurry reagents known in literature, a more familiar and economical catalyst ZnCl2 was used for the first time in our reaction procedures. Furthermore, bromine substituted stilbenes were subjected to Suzuki coupling reactions to append a triphenylamine (TPA) unit, which enhances fluorescence emissions. Solvatochromic properties of synthesized stilbenes were investigated and aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) properties of TPA containing molecules were systematically examined. Optical properties were also theoretically investigated.
