Abstract CuO nanoflakes with dimension of 50-150 nm × 200 nm were successfully immobilized on the surface of cellulose fibers by an ultrafast (5 min reaction time), scalable microwave assisted method. The achievement of high retention of CuO upto 70% has been phenomenal as the immobilization was carried out in the absence of any linker, binder or retention aid. The successful recyclability of the CuO immobilized paper matrices upto five consecutive cycles while retaining 87% of immobilized CuO nanostructures in paper matrices has been unprecedented. The antimicrobial activities of the paper matrices have been investigated by deactivating both G. trabeum and E. coli . The CuO immobilized paper matrices have desisted the growth of G. trabeum for upto 28 days, which is phenomenal and completely deactivated E. coli of the CFU in order of 10 7 in the presence of visible light with exposure time of 2 h only.

A series of well-defined antimicrobial polymers composed of comonomers bearing thiazole ring (2-(((2-(4-methylthiazol-5-yl)ethoxy)carbonyl)oxy)ethyl methacrylate monomer (MTZ)) and non-hemotoxic poly(ethylene glycol) side chains (poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA)) were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. By post-polymerization functionalization strategy, polymers were quaternized with either butyl or octyl iodides to result in cationic amphiphilic copolymers incorporating thiazolium groups, thus with variable hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance associated to the length of the alkylating agent. Likewise, the molar percentage of PEGMA was modulated in the copolymers, also affecting the amphiphilicity. The antimicrobial activities of these cationic polymers were determined against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was found to be dependent on both length of the alkyl hydrophobic chain and the content of PEGMA in the copolymers. More hydrophobic octylated copolymers were found to be more effective against all tested microorganisms. The incorporation of non-ionic hydrophilic units, PEGMA, reduces the hydrophobicity of the system and the activity is markedly reduced. This effect is dramatic in the case of butylated copolymers, in which the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance is highly affected. The hemolytic properties of polymers analyzed against human red blood cells were greatly affected by the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance of the copolymers and the content of PEGMA, which drastically reduces the hemotoxicity. The copolymers containing longer hydrophobic chain, octyl, are much more hemotoxic than their corresponding butylated copolymers.

2-Chloro-10,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,f]thiepin-10-thiol (VII) was synthesized from 2,10-dichloro-10,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,f]thiepin (IV) and was alkylated with a series of aminoalkyl chlorides which led to amino sulfides IX, XII, XIII, and XVI-XX. The primary amine IXa was transformed by treatment with ethyl chloroformate to the carbamate Xa which was reduced to the methylamino compound XIa. The carbamate XX was similarly reduced to compound XXI. Alkylation of VII with 2-bromoethanol gave the alcohol XIVa which was transformed to the crude tosylate XVa. Its reactions with the corresponding piperazines gave compounds XXII to XXIV. The alcohol XXII was esterified to the decanoate XXV. Reactions of the sodium salt of VII with ethyl chloroacetate, ethyl 2-chloropropionate and ethyl 4-chlorobutyrate gave the corresponding esters which were saponified to acids XXVIb-XXVIIIb. Their amides XXVId to XXVIIId and XXVIe were prepared either via the acid chlorides or via the esters. Out of the compounds prepared only XIa showed a clear profile of a potential antidepressant. The other compounds showed indications of thymoleptic, antiinflammatory and antimicrobial activities.

A convenient and promising synthesis of 4-(alkyl/aryl)- 3-(4-bromobenzyl)-5-(thiophen-2-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol was carried out by the reaction of 2-(4-bromobenzyl)-5-(thiophen-2-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole with different aliphatic/aromatic primary amine without any solvent. The newly synthesized compound were characterized by1H NMR, IR and Mass spectroscopy and also screened for their antimicrobial activity against various strains of bacteria and fungi.
