Protonation effect on ligands in EuL: a luminescent switcher for fast naked-eye detection of HCl

We report a luminescent lanthanide coordination polymer EuL which shows fast turn-off response to HCl vapor. This results from the energy change of the ligand excited state along with the protonation effect which renders the ligands unable to act as efficient antennae for Eu3+ characteristic emission.
