Nickel–titanium alloys are the most widely used shape memory alloys due to their outstanding shape memory effect and superelasticity. Additive manufacturing has recently emerged in the fabrication of shape memory alloy but despite substantial advances in powder-based techniques, less attention has been focused on wire-based additive manufacturing. This work reports on the preliminary results for the process-related microstructural and phase transformation changes of Ni-rich nickel–titanium alloy additively manufactured by wire-based electron beam freeform fabrication. To study the feasibility of the process, a simple 10-layer stack structure was successfully built and characterized, exhibiting columnar grains and achieving one-step reversible martensitic–austenitic transformation, thus showing the potential of this additive manufacturing technique for processing shape memory alloys.

The effect of rare earth element Nd addition on the microstructure and martensitic transformation behavior of Ni50Ti50−xNdx(x=0, 1, 3, 7, 20) shape memory alloy was investigated experimentally. The results showed that the microstructure of Ni-Ti-Nd ternary alloy consists of the NiNd phase and the NiTi matrix. One-step martensitic transformation was observed in all alloys. The martensitic transformation start temperatureMsincreased gradually with increasing Nd content for Ni-Ti-Nd alloys.

The nanocrystal, phase transformation and microstructure behavior of Ni50Ti50 shape memory alloy was investigated by scanning electronic microscope, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The results showed that the microstructure of Ni-Ti binary alloy consists of the NiTi2 phase and the NiTi matrix phase. One-step phase transformation was observed alloy.

Transformation behaviors and shape memory characteristics of Ti-45Ni-5Cu alloy ribbons fabricated by melt spinning were investigated by means of optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetries(DSC), X-ray diffraction and thermal cycling tests under constant load. They depended largely on temperatures of liquid metal. The B2-B19-B19’ two-step transformation occurred in the ribbons fabricated with the liquid whose temperature was higher than 1723 K, while the B2-B19’ one-step transformation occurred in the ribbons with the liquid at 1673 K. The stabilization of the B19 martensite in Ti-45Ni-5Cu alloy ribbons was ascribed to the high density of dislocations which made strong resistance to large lattice deformation associated with a formation of the B19’ martensite.

The effect of rare earth element neodymium (Nd) addition on the microstructure and martensitic transformation behavior of Ni[Formula: see text]Ti[Formula: see text]Nd[Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text] = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 at.%) shape memory alloy was investigated by scanning electronic microscope, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The results show that the microstructure of Ni–Ti–Nd ternary alloy consists of NiNd phase, NiTi2 and the NiTi matrix. A one-step martensitic transformation is observed in the alloys. The martensitic transformation temperature Ms increases sharply increasing 0.1–0.7 at.% Nd content is added.

Biobased shape memory polyurethane filled with carbon nanotubes (CNT) were prepared using two step polymerization process. The bio based shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) were composed of polycaprolactonediol, polyol based on palm oil, 4, 4’-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and 1, 4-butanediol. In this paper, CNTs has been used as fillers to introduce the electrical conductivity in the SMPU. The bio-based shape memory polyurethane shows electrical conductivity with addition of 7 wt% CNT.
