The carboxyl terminated poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) prepolymers were prepared via polycondensation of L-lactic acid and 1,6-adipic acid (end capping agent) under the catalyst of stannous octoate. The effects of synthetic condition, such as reaction temperature, amount of catalyst, content of the end capping agent, etc, on the molecular weight of PLLA were discussed. Fourier transform infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance were used to characterize the PLLA prepolymers. The results indicated that the polycondensation was performed under an optimum reaction condition as following: the amount of the catalyst was 500 ppm based on the mass of lactic acid, the amount of the end capping agent was 1% (the molar amount of the lactic acid), and the polymerization temperature was 170 °C. The viscosity-average molecular weight of the product reached 2.826×104 at this polymerization temperature and the yield was 73.34%.

A series of donor-acceptor copolymers with dicyclopenta[cd,jk]pyrene and dicyclopenta[cd,lm]perylene acceptor units was prepared via palladium catalyzed cyclopenta-annulation reactions. The acceptor units were paired with diethynyl containing donor groups based on benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene, thieno[3,2-b]thiophene, and 4-octyl-4H-dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole to create six polymer variants. The cyclopentannulation polymerization resulted in copolymers with molecular weights (Mn) of 6-14 kDa and broad light absorption in the visible region with band gaps of 1.38-1.85 eV. The synthetic methodology, as well as optoelectronic properties, including thin-film absorption and cyclic voltammetry, of the donor-acceptor copolymers are presented.

Herein, we report a mild and efficient palladium-catalyzed C–H functionalization method to synthesize a series of benzoquinone (BQ)-based charge-transfer (CT) derivatives in good yields. The optoelectronic properties of these compounds were explored both theoretically and experimentally and correlations to their structures were identified as a function of the nature and position of the donor group (meta and para) attached to the benzoquinone acceptor. Compound 3, where benzoquinone is para-conjugated to the diphenylamine donor group, exhibited thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with a biexponential lifetime characterized by a prompt ns component and a delayed component of 353 μs.
