The main energy losses in solar cells are related to spectral losses where high energy photons are not used efficiently, and energy is lost via thermalization which reduces the solar cell’s overall efficiency. A way to tackle this is to introduce a luminescent down-shifting layer (LDS) to convert these high energy photons into a lower energy bracket helping the solar cell to absorb them and thus generating a greater power output. In this paper, lumogen dye Violet 570 has been used as LDS coated films of 10μm and 60μm placed on top of Si solar cells. The dye was incorporated into polymer films of Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) and Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) after which they were tested for their absorption, transmission and emission properties. Once optimised layers had been determined, they were deposited directly onto silicon solar cells and the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the Si solar cells were measured with and without the LDS layers. The resulting graphs have shown an increase of up to 2.9% in the overall EQE efficiency after the lumogen films had been applied.

Two kinds of Ag-pastes were prepared for integrating the bulk Si solar cell. One is the Ag-paste mixed with Pb-based glass frit and the other is that mixed with Pb-free glass frit. The major components in the silver paste were 84 wt% Ag, 2 wt% glass frit, 11 wt% solvent of buthyl-cabitol acetate, and 2 wt% the other additives. After fabricating the Ag-pastes, they were coated on the SiNx/n+/p- stacks of a commercial mono-Si substrate. The solar cell efficiency was 17.6% in case of the silver paste mixed with Pb-based glass frit, which was one of the world-best records in the technology. By the way, the efficiency was 16.2% in the solar cell integrated with the silver paste mixed with Pb-free glass frit. The lower performance in the Pb-free Ag-paste was caused by the higher serial resistance and the lower shunt resistance in comparison with the Pb-containing Ag paste.

In this simultion work, the effect of front and back contacts of p-n homojunction Si solar cell with an electron-blocking layer (EBL) has been studied with the help of a strong solar cell simulator named AMPS-1D (analysis of microelectronic and photonic structures one dimensional). Without the effect of these contact parameters, low solar cell efficiency has been observed. Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) with high work function (5.45 eV) has been used as the front contact to the proposed solar cell. Zinc (Zn) metal which has a work function of 4.3 eV has been used as the back contact of the proposed model. With FTO as the front contact and Zn as the back contact, the optimum efficiency of 29.275% (Voc = 1.363 V, Jsc = 23.747 mA/cm2, FF = 0.905) has been observed. This type of simple Si-based p-n homojunction solar cell with EBL of high efficiency has been proposed in this paper.
