Bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) hexagonal nanosheet crystals with uniform size were successfully prepared via a solvothermal method at 160°C for 22 h using bismuth trichloride(BiCl3) and selenium powder(Se) as raw materials, sodium bisulfite(NaHSO3) as a reducing agent, diethylene glycol(DEG) as solvent, and ammonia as pH regulator. Various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) were used to characterize the obtained products. Results show that the as-synthesized samples are pure Bi2Se3 hexagonal nanosheet crystals. A possible growth mechanism for Bi2Se3 hexagonal nanosheet crystals is also discussed based on the experiment.

Here we report on the growth and evolution of ZnO nanowires grown from ZnO nanopowder as a source material using a horizontal muffle furnace. The shape evolution has been studied with variation in growth temperature and zinc vapor pressure. The structural analysis on these nanostructures shows c-axis oriented aligned growth. Scanning electron microscopy imaging of these nanostructures revealed the shape evolution from nanowires to nanoribbons and then to nanorods as the growth temperature increases from 650°C to 870°C. At 650°C, only vertical nanowires have been observed and with increase in growth temperature nanowires transform to nanoribbons and then to nanorods at 870°C. And we also observed simultaneous growth of nanorods and nanoribbons under a specific growth condition. We believe that these nanowires and nanorods were formed by vapor–liquid–solid growth mechanism (catalyst-mediated growth), whereas nanoribbons were grown by vapor–solid growth mechanism (without the aid of a metal catalyst). We observed simultaneous occurrence of vapor–liquid–solid and vapor–solid growth mechanisms at a particular growth temperature. These ZnO nanowires exhibit bound exciton related UV emission at ~379 nm, and defect-emission band in the visible region. Possible growth mechanism, shape evolution, and simultaneous growth of two types of one-dimensional ZnO nanostructures under the same growth condition are discussed.

Flower-like Bi2WO6 were successfully synthesized using the solvothermal method at different temperatures and characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, and DRS. We also investigated the photocatalytic activity of Bi2WO6 for the decomposition of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. From XRD and SEM results, the reaction temperature has significant effects on the morphologies of the samples. From DRS results, Bi2WO6 samples displayed the absorption spectrum up to the visible region and then they showed the high photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, as a comparison with TiO2-P25.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a semiconductor material that widely used in various applications due to its unique properties. Synthesis of ZnO by solvothermal method has been conducted with controlled pH values. The variations of pH value were 10, 11 and 12 by adjusting NaOH content. Crystall structure of the synthesis products after heat treatment at 110oC and 600oC has characterised by X-ray Diffratometer (XRD). Crystallite size of ZnO was measured by Scherrer equation. Crystall phase of ZnO has been observed on all pH value variations at 110 oC with 22,98-37,06 nm of crystallite size, whereas ZnO has been observed on all pH value variations at 600 oC with 41,39-71,77 nm of crystallite size. Keywords: ZnO, pH values, crystallite size, solvothermal
