Two series of bio-based poly(ether–ester)s prepared from vanillic acid and linear α,ω-diols have been successfully synthesized by the direct esterification method. The mechanical properties of these poly(ether–ester)s are excellent, making them suitable materials for some practical applications.

As a light-weight material with high stiffness and strength, cellular metal has attracted a lot of attentions in the past two decades. In this paper, the structure and mechanical properties of aluminum cellular metal with periodic cubic cells are studied. The aluminum cellular metal is fabricated by sheet metal stamping and simple adhesion. Two sizes of specimens with cell sizes of 3mm and 5mm are fabricated. Their relative density and mechanical properties are tested by means of experiments. The results show that the cubic-cell cellular metal has high and predictable strength and hence, can be used for many practical applications.

In order to overcome the various defects caused by the limitations of solid metal as a shielding material, the development of electromagnetic shielding materials with flexibility and excellent mechanical properties is of great significance for the next generation of intelligent electronic devices. Here, the aramid nanofiber/Ti3C2Tx MXene (ANF/MXene) composite films with multilayer structure were successfully prepared through a simple alternate vacuum-assisted filtration (AVAF) process. With the intervention of the ANF layer, the multilayer-structure film exhibits excellent mechanical properties. The ANF2/MXene1 composite film exhibits a tensile strength of 177.7 MPa and a breaking strain of 12.6%. In addition, the ANF5/MXene4 composite film with a thickness of only 30 μm exhibits an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding efficiency of 37.5 dB and a high EMI-specific shielding effectiveness value accounting for thickness (SSE/t) of 4718 dB·cm2 g−1. Moreover, the composite film was excellent in heat-insulation performance and in avoiding light-to-heat conversion. No burning sensation was produced on the surface of the film with a thickness of only 100 μm at a high temperature of 130 °C. Furthermore, the surface of the film was only mild when touched under simulated sunlight. Therefore, our multilayer-structure film has potential significance in practical applications such as next-generation smart electronic equipment, communications, and military applications.

The possibility and mechanical improvement of the infrared ceramic coatings fabricated on fluoride substrates at room temperature by aerosol deposition (AD) were investigated aiming to optical components for infrared applications and devices. The yttria coating possibility fabricated on barium fluoride substrates by the AD process was found by adjusting one of the deposition conditions. The optical and mechanical properties of the fabricated ceramic coatings, which are important in practical applications, were evaluated by transmittance and hardness measurements respectively. The mechanical hardness of the fabricated yttria single coatings was increased to 4 times higher than that of the barium fluoride substrates. Furthermore, by an additional layer on a barium fluoride substrate, the mechanical properties of the fabricated multi-coatings including an upper yttria layer were improved from that of the single yttria coating on the barium fluoride substrate, retaining the IR transmittance of the single yttria coating at the wavelength of 10μm.

The solid–solid phase transition, poor mechanical properties, and high sensitivity has impeded further practical applications of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX) based polymer bonded explosives (PBXs). To address these issues together, a facile and effective route was employed to achieve a coating of polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of explosive crystals via in situ polymerization of dopamine. Additionally, PBXs based on HMX@PDA microcapsules were prepared with a fluoropolymer as polymer binder. Improved storage modulus, static mechanical strength and toughness, and creep resistance has been achieved in as-prepared PDA modified PBXs. The β-δ phase transition temperature of as-obtained PBXs based on conventional HMX (C-HMX)@PDA was improved by 16.3 °C. The friction sensitivity of the C-HMX based PBXs showed a dramatic drop after the PDA coating. A favorable balance proposed in this paper among thermal stability, mechanical properties, and sensitivity was achieved for C-HMX based PBXs with the incorporation of PDA.

Lateral field excitation quartz crystal microbalance (LFE-QCM) can detect both the electrical properties (conductivity and permittivity) and mechanical properties (viscosity and density) of the liquid. In practical applications for detecting electrical properties, the viscosity and density of the liquid will also change. This research proposed a dual-channel LFE-QCM for reducing the influence of density and viscosity. The sensing layer of one resonant element is almost bare, and the other is covered by a metal film as a reference. Different organic solutions and NaCl solution were used to study the influence of mechanical properties and the temperature on electrical properties. The experimental results demonstrate that the dual-channel LFE-QCM is necessary for properly detecting electrical properties of the liquid.

Hastelloy X is a commercially available nickel-chromium-molybdenum superalloy with a good oxidation resistance, a good mechanical properties at high temperature and a significant formability; sine qua criteria for the choice of materials for the production of chambers turbojet combustion which is part of this study [1]. Arc welding technique is commonly used for the manufacturing of parts but the aeronautical requirements becoming increasingly severe especially in terms of reproducibility of geometry and metallurgical grade fillet weld. Laser welding is a viable method of assembly to meet these new demands by its automation to replace longer term the manual TIG welding. The high power CO2laser is extensively used for practical applications such as cutting and welding laser welding. The CO2laser is very used in the industry with regard to Yb:YAG laser which until now was not rather powerful but this changes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Yb:YAG laser beam parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the laser beam welded superalloys Hastelloy X to define a field of weldability. The implementation of an experimental design approach is required due to the multitude of input parameters and the complexity of the phenomena involved [2-3].

Vulcanization and reinforcement are critical factors in governing the ultimate practical applications of elastomer composites. Here we achieved a simultaneous improvement of curing and mechanical properties of elastomer composites by the incorporation of a functionalized halloysite nanotubes–silica hybrid (HS-s-M). Typically, HS-s-M was synthesized by 2-mercapto benzothiazole (M) immobilized on the surface of halloysite nanotubes–silica hybrid (HS). It was found that the HS-s-M uniformly dispersed in the styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) matrix, offering more opportunity for M molecules to communicate with rubber. In addition, the physical loss of accelerator M from migration and volatilization was efficiently suspended. Therefore, SBR/HS-s-M composites showed a lower curing activation energy and a higher crosslinking density than SBR/HS composites. Moreover, a stronger interfacial interaction between HS-s-M and SBR was formed by the cross-linking reaction, giving a positive contribution to the eventual mechanical properties. The possible vulcanization and reinforcement mechanisms of SBR/HS-s-M composites were also analyzed in detail.
