Two pyridinium amide-based receptors L1 and L2 with a small difference of H-bond position of the amide have been synthesized and characterized. Interestingly, they exhibited a huge difference in sensing towards AcO- and H2PO4 -, respectively. Receptor L1 was found to be ‘naked-eye’ selective for AcO- anions, while receptor L2 showed clear fluorescence enhancement selective to H2PO4 - anion. The recognition ability has been established by fluorescence emission, UV-vis spectra, and 1HNMR titration.

A novel ligand with double sulfinyl groups, bis(benzylsulfinyl)methane L, was synthesized by a new method. Its novel ternary complex, has been synthesized [using L as the first ligand, and dipyridyl L' as the second ligand]. In order to study the effect of the second ligand on the fluorescence properties of rare-earth sulfoxide complex, a novel binary europium complex has been synthesized. Photoluminescent measurement showed that the first ligand L could efficiently transfer the energy to Eu (III) ions in the complex. Furthermore, the detailed luminescence analyses on the rare earth complexes indicated that the ternary Eu (III) complex manifested stronger fluorescence intensities, longer lifetimes, and higher fluorescence quantum efficiencies than the binary Eu (III) materials. The fluorescence emission intensities and fluorescence lifetimes of the ternary complex enhanced more obviously than the binary complex.

In this work, a novel 7-hydroxybenzoxazinone-based fluorescent probe (PBD) for the selective sensing of biothiols is reported. Upon treatment with biothiols, PBD shows a strong fluorescence enhancement (up to 70-fold) and a large Stokes shift (155 nm). Meanwhile, this probe exhibits high resistance to interference from other amino acids and competing species. PBD features good linearity ranges with a low detection limit of 14.5 nM for glutathione (GSH), 17.5 nM for cysteine (Cys), and 80.0 nM for homocysteine (Hcy), respectively. Finally, the potential utility of this probe for biothiol sensing in living HeLa cells is demonstrated.

In this paper, we discuss a new biosensor for simple and rapid detection of epinephrine (EP) based on polypyrrole/graphene quantum dot (PPy/GQD) composites. Presence of amine groups on the PPy backbone leads to surface passivation of GQDs. As a result, the composites exhibit strong fluorescence emission, which can be up to three times that of pristine GQDs. In neutral to alkaline solution, the EP on the surface of PPy/GQD composites is converted to a quinone, which triggers the fluorescence quenching of PPy/GQD composites via a photoinduced electron transfer process. Hence, the concentration of EP can be effectively monitored by measuring the variation in the fluorescence signal of PPy/GQD composites. The quenched fluorescence intensity of PPy/GQDs was proportional to the concentration of EP (0.7–400 μM). We used our method to determine the concentration of EP in human serum samples and obtained satisfactory results.

The title CdIIcoordination polymer, [Cd(C10H8O4)(C12H12N6)0.5(H2O)]n, has been obtained by the hydrothermal method and studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The compound forms a novel three-dimensional framework with 3,8-connected three-dimensional binodal {4.52}2{42.510.612.7.83} topology. An investigation of its photoluminescence properties shows that the compound exhibits a strong fluorescence emission in the solid state at room temperature.
