We report low-temperature magnetotransport in the normal state of the electron-doped superconductors, Nd 2-x Ce x CuO 4, Pr 2-x Ce x CuO 4, and La 2-x Ce x CuO 4, by suppressing the superconductivity with high magnetic fields. The normal state ρ-T curve shows an up-turn at low temperatures, which has a log T dependence with saturation at lowest temperatures. The up-turn is gradually suppressed with increasing magnetic field, resulting in negative magnetoresistance. We discuss these findings on the basis of the Kondo scattering originating from the magnetic moments of Cu 2+ ions.

AbstractMeasurements of the magnetomechanical effects of high permeability materials have not yet been performed because of their smallness. Using a new technique, the Joule magnetostriction of Mumetal is obtained by shear strain measurement. The change of shear modulus and the magnetomechanical damping in dc and ac magnetic fields are investigated and discussed.

The mixed phase space in an open quantum dot array with a soft confining potential is studied in low and high magnetic fields. Chaos occurs due to the perturbations by the constrictions connecting the dots of the array. Regular orbits and the areas of Kalmogorov-Arnold-Moser islands in phase space become increasingly dominating with increasing magnetic field. The correspondence to the high-field quantum-mechanical picture in a 2D electron system with boundaries is discussed.
