The Schiff base condensation reaction of 1,2-diaminoethane with a series of 2-acetylcycloalkanones (from cyclopentanone to cyclooctanone) has been investigated and the products characterized by two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance. The site of attack of the amino groups, i.e., ring ketone or acetyl ketone, is determined primarily by ring size. 2-Acetylcyclohexanone yields two products in ca. 9:1 ratio, the major product where the two amino groups attack at the ring ketones of two different cyclohexanone molecules, and the minor product where one amino group attacks one ring carbonyl of one cyclohexanone while the second amino group attacks the acetyl group of another. 2-Acetylcyclopentanone yields all three possible products with the major product involving attack at the acetyl groups of two different cyclopentanones. The corresponding reactions for 2-acetylcycloheptanone and 2-acetylcyclooctanone each give a single product corresponding to attack at the acetyl groups of two different cycloalkanones. Similar product distributions are observed for the reactions of the different 2-acetylcycloalkanones with 1,4-diaminobutane. Keywords: Schiff base reactions, diketones, 2D NMR.

The preparation of a series of novel compounds of general formula [Ni5L4(NO2)8(OH)2] formed by ethane-1,2-diamine or one of five N-substituted ethane-1,2-diamines (L) is described. The crystal and molecular structures of the ethane-1,2-diamine, N,N'-diethylethane-1,2-diamine and N,N-dimethylethane-1,2-diamine complexes are reported. Each compound contains a planar, pentameric arrangement of nickel(II) ions, linked by bridging hydroxide and nitrite ligands. The details of the nitrite bridges differ among the complexes, causing differences in their electronic and infrared spectra. The structural variations are probably caused by the differing steric requirements of the amine substituents.

In the crystals of the titleN-halomethylated quaternary ammonium salts, C19H23IN+·I−, (I) [systematic name:N-(4,4-diphenylbut-3-en-1-yl)-N-iodomethyl-N,N-dimethylammonium iodide], C20H25IN+·I−, (II) [systematic name:N-(5,5-diphenylpent-4-en-1-yl)-N-iodomethyl-N,N-dimethylammonium iodide], and C21H27IN+·I−, (III) [systematic name:N-(6,6-diphenylhex-5-en-1-yl)-N-iodomethyl-N,N-dimethylammonium iodide], there are short I...I−interactions of 3.564 (4), 3.506 (1) and 3.557 (1) Å for compounds (I), (II) and (III), respectively. Compound (I) crystallizes in the Sohncke groupP21as an `enantiopure' compound and is therefore a potential material for NLO properties. In the crystal of compound (I), molecules are linked by C—H...I−and C—H...π interactions which, together with the I...I−interactions, lead to the formation of ribbons along [100]. In (II), there are only C—H...I−interactions which, together with the I...I−interactions, lead to the formation of helices along [010]. In (III), apart from the I...I−interactions, there are no significant intermolecular interactions present.
