An efficient two-step polymer grafting procedure is developed for the functionalisation of boron nitride nanotubes. Using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerisation, dense grafts of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) and polystyrene were grown from the nanotube surface.

‘Plug-and-play’ simplified electrochemical atom transfer radical polymerisation of PEGA480 under potentiostatic and galvanostatic conditions proceeds with very good control to conversions up to 83%.

A fluorescent amino poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGOHMA) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and post-polymerization. PGOHMA has low cytotoxicity and high DNA delivery efficiency.

A cellulose-based nanocomposite was obtained by SI-ATRP with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) monomer and further hydrophobically functionalized with C7F15COCl to give a hydrophobic cellulose nanocomposite.
