Coptidis Rhizoma is a medicinal plant that is well known for its high antibacterial activity against various pathogens and its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hemostatic effects. Here, nanofibrous membranes containing 10, 20, and 30 wt% of Coptidis Rhizoma extracts were fabricated by electrospinning using poly(vinyl alcohol) as the drug carrier and thermally treated to increase their aqueous stability. The antibacterial properties and release characteristics of Coptidis Rhizoma nanofibrous membranes were investigated. Coptidis Rhizoma-loaded nanocomposite fibers exhibited a high drug-loading efficiency ranging from 92% to 97%. The release profile from the nanofibrous membranes of Coptidis Rhizoma showed an initial fast release followed by a gradual release for 48 h. High antibacterial activity of the Coptidis Rhizoma-loaded nanofibrous membranes was exhibited against both Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. These results demonstrate that poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibrous membranes containing Coptidis Rhizoma extracts have considerable potential to be effective antimicrobial wound dressings based on natural substances.

The present research work is focused on the design and investigation of electrospun composite membranes based on citric acid-functionalized chitosan (CsA) containing reduced graphene oxide-tetraethylene pentamine (CsA/rGO-TEPA) as materials with opportune bio-properties for applications in wound dressings. The covalent functionalization of chitosan (CS) with citric acid (CA) was achieved through the EDC/NHS coupling system and was checked by 1H-NMR spectroscopy and FTIR spectrometry. The mixtures to be electrospun were formulated by adding three concentrations of rGO-TEPA into the 1/1 (w/w) CsA/poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) solution. The effect of rGO-TEPA concentration on the morphology, wettability, thermal stability, cytocompatibility, cytotoxicity, and anti-biofilm activity of the nanofibrous membranes was extensively investigated. FTIR and Raman results confirmed the covalent and non-covalent interactions that appeared between the system’s compounds, and the exfoliation of rGO-TEPA sheets within the CsA in the presence of PEO (CsA/P) polymer matrix, respectively. SEM analysis emphasized the nanofibrous architecture of membranes and the presence of rGO-TEPA sheets entrapped into the CsA nanofiber structure. The MTT cellular viability assay showed a good cytocompatibility with the highest level of cell development and proliferation registered for the CsA/P composite nanofibrous membrane with 0.250 wt.% rGO-TEPA. The designed nanofibrous membranes could have potential applications in wound dressings, given that they showed a good anti-biofilm activity against Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains.

Summary Background: To evaluate the implementation of the guidelines of the German Society of Phlebology for venous crural ulcer a survey was conducted during the annual meeting of the German Society of Phlebology 2008 in Bochum. Methods: All 719 medical participants got an anonymized questionnaire asking for supply of crural ulcer in their institution. Results: The recurrent 66 questionnaires (9.2%) were filled by colleagues from practice or hospital, mostly surgeons, dermatologists, phlebologists and vascular surgeons. As basic diagnostics vein doppler (56.1%), duplex (75.8%) or measurement of brachial-ankleindex (83.3%) were performed. Compression therapy is used in all institutions. Mainly used wound dressings are polyurethane foam dressings, alginates, hydrocolloids and silver dressings. About 2/3 conduct surgical therapy of ulcers. Conclusion: Supply of ulcus cruris by the participants of the annual meeting of the DGP corresponds mainly, but not in all aspects to the guidelines. Further efforts for a spread of the guidelines are necessary.

Isaac Bayley Balfour was a systematist specializing in Sino-Himalayan plants. He enjoyed a long and exceptionally distinguished academic career yet he was knighted, in 1920, “for services in connection with the war”. Together with an Edinburgh surgeon, Charles Cathcart, he had discovered in 1914 something well known to German doctors; dried Sphagnum (bog moss) makes highly absorptive, antiseptic wound dressings. Balfour directed the expertise and resources of the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh (of which he was Keeper), towards the identification of the most useful Sphagnum species in Britain and the production of leaflets telling collectors where to find the moss in Scotland. By 1918 over one million such dressings were used by British hospitals each month. Cathcart's Edinburgh organisation, which received moss before making it into dressings, proved a working model soon adopted in Ireland, and later in both Canada and the United States.
