A DNA/AuNP (gold nanoparticle) detecting nano-device has been constructed using DNA displacement (three-way branch migration). Here, DNA/AuNP conjugations and DNA circle are utilized as basic parts in nano-system, while sensitive fluorescent signals are applied as output results. Because of the accurate molecular recognition and effective strand displacements, this detecting system is able to yield correct results after receiving specific input DNA signals. In this work, the results are detected at three levels: PAGE gel bands, fluorescent signals and TEM images. Especially, in TEM images, positions of AuNPs are detected as an alternative approach to obtain output results. Combing these multiple detecting methods together, advantages of this DNA/AuNP system could be taken used entirely. It is believed that DNA/AuNPs conjugations nano-device will be applied widely in molecular detecting fields.

Cyclopropanated iminosugars have a locked conformation that may enhance the inhibitory activity and selectivity against different glycosidases. We show the synthesis of new cyclopropane-containing piperidines bearing five stereogenic centers from natural amino acids l-serine and l-alanine. Those prepared from the latter amino acid may mimic l-fucose, a natural-occurring monosaccharide involved in many molecular recognition events. Final compounds prepared from l-serine bear S configurations on the C5 position. The synthesis involved a stereoselective cyclopropanation reaction of an α,β-unsaturated piperidone, which was prepared through a ring-closing metathesis. The final compounds were tested as possible inhibitors of different glycosidases. The results, although, in general, with low inhibition activity, showed selectivity, depending on the compound and enzyme, and in some cases, an unexpected activity enhancement was observed.

A program for providing information to children who are deaf about their deafness and addressing common concerns about deafness is detailed. Developed by a school audiologist and the school counselor, this two-part program is geared for children from 3 years to 15 years of age. The first part is an educational audiology program consisting of varied informational classes conducted by the audiologist. Five topics are addressed in this part of the program, including basic audiology, hearing aids, FM systems, audiograms, and student concerns. The second part of the program consists of individualized counseling. This involves both one-to-one counseling sessions between a student and the school counselor, as well as conjoint sessions conducted—with the student’s permission—by both the audiologist and the school counselor.
