Incorporation studies of particles in different substrates with herbal assets growing. The objective of this work was the preparation and characterization of micro/nanoparticles containing cymbopogon nardus essential oil; and the incorporation of them on bacterial cellulose. For the development of the membranes was used the static culture medium and for the preparation of micro/nanoparticles was used the nanoprecipitation methodology. The incorporation of micro/nanoparticles was performed on samples of bacterial cellulose in wet and dry form. For the characterization of micro/nanoparticles were carried out analysis of SEM, zeta potential and particle size. For the verification of the incorporation of particulate matter in cellulose, analyses were conducted of SEM and FTIR. The results showed that it is possible the production and incorporation of micro/nanoparticles containing essential oil in bacterial cellulose membranes in wet form with ethanol.

We present an experimental study on the electrofluidic transistor in this paper. A novel and easy way to integrate the transistor into a microchannel is developed. The performances of the insulating layer, especially the leakage current under gate voltage, are carefully characterized. The change of surface charge on silica surface by gate polarization is measured, however, by measuring the streaming current, the gating effect on zeta potential has not been observed. This result should imply new assumption in the understanding of the charge regulation in the electrical double layer under gate polarization.

In this study, the properties of the initial fouling layer on the membrane surface of a bioreactor were investigated under different operating modes (with or without permeate flux) to improve the understanding of the effect of permeation drag on the formation of the initial fouling layer. It was found that protein was the major component in the two types of initial fouling layers, and that the permeation drag enhanced the tryptophan protein-like substances. The attraction of the initial foulants to the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was ascribed to the high zeta potential and electron donor component (γ−) of the membrane. Thermodynamic analyses showed that the permeation drag-induced fouling layer possessed high hydrophobicity and low γ−. Due to permeation drag, a portion of the foulants overcame an energy barrier before they contacted the membrane surface, which itself possessed a higher fouling propensity. A declining trend of the cohesive strength among the foulants was found with the increasing development of both fouling layers.

Pd/Ag/SiO2 sols and powder materials were prepared by adding AgNO3 and Pd (NO3)2·2H2O into a methyl-modified silica sol. Tetraethylorthosilicate and methyltriethoxysilane were used as the silica precursor for the sol-gel reaction. The obtained SiO2 sols and powder materials were characterized by sol particle size distribution, zeta potential analysis, UV-Vis spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement. It was found that most of the particle sizes of the prepared Pd/Ag/SiO2 sols are about 2~10 nm with narrow size distribution. The zeta potential of Pd/Ag/SiO2 sol with Pd/Ag molar ratio of 7.5/2.5 presents the highest value. The FTIR analysis substantiates that the Si-CH3 groups exist in the silica network and the formed Pd/Ag/SiO2 sol particles possess linear structure. XRD characterization indicates that the Pd2+ and Ag+ in the Pd/Ag/SiO2 materials had be reduced to Pd0 and Ag0, respectively, after annealed in a nitrogen atmosphere at 350°C.
