A new organic charge transfer molecular complex salt of benzimidazolium salicylate (BSL) single crystals was grown by the slow evaporation solution growth technique using methanol as a solvent at room temperature. The grown crystals were characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) which confirms that the crystal belongs to monoclinic system with the centrosymmetric space group P21/c. The crystalline perfection of the grown crystal was analyzed by high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The presence of various functional groups was identified by FTIR spectrum. UV-Vis spectral study reveals that the BSL crystal is optically transparent in the wavelength region 342 nm–1100 nm. Dielectric measurements of the crystal at various frequencies were also determined. The mechanical properties of the grown crystal were assessed using Vickers microhardness testing. Nonlinear optical property of the crystal was confirmed using Kurtz and Perry powder technique and the SHG efficiency of the BSL crystal is 0.7 times greater than that of the standard KDP crystal.

An crystal-growth technique for single crystal x-ray structure analysis of high-pressure forms of hydrogen-bonded crystals is proposed. We used alcohol mixture (methanol: ethanol = 4:1 in volumetric ratio), which is a widely used pressure transmitting medium, inhibiting the nucleation and growth of unwanted crystals. In this paper, two kinds of single crystals which have not been obtained using a conventional experimental technique were obtained using this technique: ice VI at 1.99 GPa and MgCl2·7H2O at 2.50 GPa at room temperature. Here we first report the crystal structure of MgCl2·7H2O. This technique simultaneously meets the requirement of hydrostaticity for high-pressure experiments and has feasibility for further in-situ measurements.

In this article, we report the crystallization of struvite in sodium metasilicate gel by single diffusion gel growth technique. The obtained crystals have a very rich morphology displaying 18 faces. In this study, the habit and morphology of the obtained struvite crystals are analyzed. The crystals were examined and identified as pure struvite by single X-ray diffraction (XRD). The orthorhombic polar noncentrosymmetric space group Pmn21 was identified. The structure of the crystal was determined at a temperature of 90 K. Our research indicates a lack of polymorphism, resulting from the temperature lowering to 90 K, which has not been previously reported. The determined unit cell parameters are as follows a = 6.9650(2) Å, b = 6.1165(2) Å, c = 11.2056(3) Å. The structure of struvite is presented here with a residual factor R1 = 1.2% at 0.80 Å resolution. We also present thermoanalytical study of struvite using thermal analysis techniques such as thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

Powders of lithium niobate-tantalate across the full compositional range have been made and crystals grown using a lithium vanadate flux growth technique. The Li-content of a lithium tantalate crystal has been determined using the zero-birefringence temperature and Curie measurements, confirming the Li content is between that of congruent and stoichiometric crystals. X-ray diffraction measurements show the Nb/Ta displacement and octahedral tilt both decrease as the Ta content is increased. This also results in a decrease in the lattice parameters from lithium niobate to lithium tantalate. Birefringence measurements on the crystals as a function of temperature have been used to determine the point that the crystals become zero-birefringent, and by comparison with the structural studies have confirmed that it is not related to a phase transition and the structures remain polar through the zero-birefringence points.

In the summer of 1977 the IAU General Secretary requested proposals for Joint Discussions at the XVIIth General Assembly more than two years later. As President of Commission 40 I wrote to other Commission Presidents proposing a J.D. on Extragalactic High Energy Astrophysics. The motivation was as follows, and I quote from my July 22, 1977 letter:“With the current advances in radio and optical techniques and the tremendous progress to be expected from the satellites HEAO-A and HEAO-B, to be launched respectively in the summer of 1977 and 1978, there should be a good deal of new material on high energy astrophysical phenomena in the extragalactic domain by the time of the 1979 General Assembly. Some of this will be of great cosmological significance and all of it will be astrophysically interesting. It is clear that the X-ray satellite results will get a lot of optical and radio follow-up and it therefore seems appropriate that a Joint Discussion of that topic be arranged at that time.”

AbstractThe growth of SrRuO$$_3$$ 3 (SRO) thin film with high-crystallinity and low residual resistivity (RR) is essential to explore its intrinsic properties. Here, utilizing the adsorption-controlled growth technique, the growth condition of initial SrO layer on TiO$$_2$$ 2 -terminated SrTiO$$_3$$ 3 (STO) (001) substrate was found to be crucial for achieving a low RR in the resulting SRO film grown afterward. The optimized initial SrO layer shows a c(2 $$\times $$ × 2) superstructure that was characterized by electron diffraction, and a series of SRO films with different thicknesses (ts) were then grown. The resulting SRO films exhibit excellent crystallinity with orthorhombic-phase down to $$t \approx $$ t ≈ 4.3 nm, which was confirmed by high resolution X-ray measurements. From X-ray azimuthal scan across SRO orthorhombic (02 ± 1) reflections, we uncover four structural domains with a dominant domain of orthorhombic SRO [001] along cubic STO [010] direction. The dominant domain population depends on t, STO miscut angle ($$\alpha $$ α ), and miscut direction ($$\beta $$ β ), giving a volume fraction of about 92 $$\%$$ % for $$t \approx $$ t ≈ 26.6 nm and $$(\alpha , \beta ) \approx $$ ( α , β ) ≈ (0.14$$^{\mathrm{o}}$$ o , 5$$^{\mathrm{o}}$$ o ). On the other hand, metallic and ferromagnetic properties were well preserved down to t$$\approx $$ ≈ 1.2 nm. Residual resistivity ratio (RRR = $$\rho ({\mathrm{300 K}})$$ ρ ( 300 K ) /$$\rho ({\mathrm{5K}})$$ ρ ( 5 K ) ) reduces from 77.1 for t$$\approx $$ ≈ 28.5 nm to 2.5 for t$$\approx $$ ≈ 1.2 nm, while $$\rho ({\mathrm{5K}})$$ ρ ( 5 K ) increases from 2.5 $$\upmu \Omega $$ μ Ω cm for t$$\approx $$ ≈ 28.5 nm to 131.0 $$\upmu \Omega $$ μ Ω cm for t$$\approx $$ ≈ 1.2 nm. The ferromagnetic onset temperature ($$T'_{\mathrm{c}}$$ T c ′ ) of around 151 K remains nearly unchanged down to t$$\approx $$ ≈ 9.0 nm and decreases to 90 K for t$$\approx $$ ≈ 1.2 nm. Our finding thus provides a practical guideline to achieve high crystallinity and low RR in ultra-thin SRO films by simply adjusting the growth of initial SrO layer.

ABSTRACTIndium droplet formation during the epitaxial growth of InxGa1-xN films is a serious problem for achieving high quality films with high indium mole fraction. In this paper, we studied the formation of indium droplets on the InxGa1-xN films grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) using single crystal x-ray diffraction. It is found that the indium (101) peak in the x-ray diffraction spectra can be utilized as a quantitative measure to determine the amounts of indium droplets on the film. It is shown by monitoring the indium diffraction peak that the density of indium droplets increases at lower growth temperature. To suppress these indium droplets, a modulation growth technique is used. Indium droplet formation in the modulation growth is investigated and it is revealed in our study that the indium droplets problem has been partially relieved by the modulation growth technique.
