A solid phase method is described for the synthesis of O- phosphoseryl-containing peptides by the use of polystyrene resin (Merrifield) as the peptide support and protected Boc-Ser(PO3R2)-OH derivatives for the incorporation of the phosphorylated seryl residue. The viability of this solid phase approach was demonstrated by the synthesis of HBr.H-Glu-Ser (PO3Et2)-Leu-OH in high yield by the use of Bo -Ser(PO3Et2)-OH in peptide synthesis and subsequent use of HBr/CF3CO2H for cleavage of the Ser(PO3Et2)-containing tripeptide from the resin support. Similarly, the dipeptide, CF3CO2H.H-Ser(P)- Leu -OH, was prepared in high yield by using Boc -Ser(PO3But2)-OH in peptide synthesis followed by the one-step deprotection of the Ser(PO3But2)- dipeptide resin by treatment with HBr/CF3CO2H (90 min). Alternatively, the O-phosphoseryl tripeptide , CF3CO2H.H-Glu-Ser(P)- Leu -OH was prepared by using either Ppoc -Ser(PO3Bzl2)-OH or Boc-Ser(PO3Ph2)-OH in peptide synthesis. The one-step deprotection of the Ser(PO3Bzl2)-containing tripeptide and cleavage of the peptide from the resin support was effected by high-pressure hydrogenolysis (palladium acetate). In the case of phenyl phosphate protection, the Ser(PO3Ph2)-containing peptide was cleaved from the resin support by high-pressure hydrogenolysis (palladium acetate) followed by cleavage of the phenyl phosphate groups by platinum-mediated hydrogenolysis (1.0 equiv. PtO2/phenyl group) in 50% CF3CO2H/AcOH.

Continuous composition gradients of several millimetres were generated in commercial WC-Co cutters to improve their shock resistance. This important gradation was obtained in one-step by using the imbibition process. The effects of this thermal processing were analysed in terms of microhardness, cobalt concentration and WC grain size. A gradient of a 300 HV amplitude is measured in the 8 mm-height sample treated by the imbibition process in association with a boron-rich coating. This gradient was preserved after the HPHT (high pressure – high temperature) step used for the diamond table deposition on the WC-Co cutter. To our knowledge, such gradients have never before been reported and should certainly increase cutter service life.

A countless amount of energy has been wasted in all kinds of expansion valves (EV) in industries. In fact, EVs, including regulators, throttling valves, capillary tubes, etc., have been used to intentionally reduce the potential of carrier fluid. City gate stations (CGS) have been recognized as one of the important points with high potential for energy harvesting due to its function for regulating natural gas (NG) pressure by EV. In this study, Tesla turbine (TT) is introduced as a new candidate for substitution of EV, particularly those that have been employed in CGS on high-pressure NG pipelines, as well as those applications in which high-potential fluid must be reduced to a low-potential state to form a complete thermodynamic cycle or to be used at end-user equipment. Although harvesting energy is one of the hottest fields of science and engineering, there are few traces of research on using a TT as an alternative for EVs, even for the industries possessing high-pressure lines. This numerical experiment intends to show the capability of TT as a robust candidate for substituting regulation valves through investigating thermohydrodynamic characteristics of the turbulent high-pressure compressible NG flow through a TT under different operation conditions. This study, with the objective of managing the exploitation of resources, can be considered as one step forward toward reinforcing economic and environmental pillars of sustainable development. It is also found that the generated power by TT can support the 285 7W LED simultaneously, or it is equivalent to 84.4 m2 area of the solar panel (150 W, 15.42% efficiency) for the climate condition of Toronto, Canada.

Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy 6066 is a heat-treatable wrought alloy that is commonly used in high performance bicycle frames. Wrought alloys are difficult to cast using conventional liquid casting techniques, as hot tearing can occur. However, a method that effectively reduces that risk is rheo-high pressure die casting (R-HPDC). Casting alloy 6066 using semi-solid metal processing makes it possible to be used for near-net shape forming of components. This study investigates the age-hardening response of R-HPDC alloy 6066. The effects of different solution heat treatments, natural pre-ageing and artificial ageing are studied. The different solution heat treatments investigated are a one-step and a two-step solution treatment. The one-step treatment was performed at 530°C only and the two-step treatment at 530°C followed by 550°C. It is shown that natural pre-ageing has a detrimental effect on the T6 properties and that the longer two-step solution heat treatment is justified due to an increase in hardness and prevention of incipient melting. The Vickers hardness in different temper conditions (F, T4, T5 and T6) were determined and compared to the typical hardness values of the alloy in the wrought condition.
