The major isomer obtained by hydrogenation of dibenzo-24-crown-8 ether is shown to have the cis-syn-cis configuration as determined from the crystal structure of its sodium perchlorate complex. This material possesses eight-coordinate sodium with Na—O distances ranging from 2.54 to 2.78 Å. The complex is shown to exist in a single asymmetric conformation below 240 K as determined by 13C NMR at 125 MHz. From NMR coalescence temperature measurement, the free energy of activation for cyclohexane ring inversion in this complex has been determined to be 51.0 ± 0.6 kJ/mol.

The title complex is asymmetric in the crystal due to the spatial orientation of the NCS function. The space group has been determined to be P21 with a = 9.496(3), b = 8.736(3), c = 9.676(3) Å, β = 117.859(5)°, and Z = 2. The solid state 13C NMR spectrum is consistent with the lack of symmetry in the crystal and there is little evidence for large amplitude motion in the macrocycle as determined from the dipolar dephased spectrum.Key words: macrocyclic crown ether, lithium complex.

[VCl2(15-crown-5)]+[VOCl4]- has been prepared by the reaction of VCl4 with 15-crown-5 in acetonitrile solution in the presence of water, forming black-brown single crystals. They were characterized by IR spectroscopy as well as by an X-ray structure determination. Space group Pnma, Z = 4, 1530 observed unique reflexions, R = 0.052. Lattice dimensions at -120°C: a = 1128.5(4), b = 1063.3(3), c = 1680(1) pm. The compound forms ions, in which the cation contains vanadium(+III), which is seven coordinate by the five oxygen atoms of the crown ether molecule and by two chlorine atoms in axial positions of a pentagonal bipyramide. The [VOCl4]- anion contains vanadium (+V) with approximately tetragonal symmetry

Benzo-9-crown-3 ether trimerizes in the presence of FeCl3 and aqueous H2SO4 to produce tris(9-crown-3)triphenylene in 25.4% yield. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic P21/c space group: a = 13.759(2) Å, b = 13.318(2) Å, c = 13.399(2) Å, β = 96.883(2)°, with Z = 4. The three 9-crown-3 ether units of the trimer possess different geometries and there is substantial deviation from coplanarity in the three aromatic rings. 13C NMR chemical shifts in the solid state are consistent with this lack of symmetry and are discussed in terms of the X-ray crystal-structure data.Key words: crown ether, trimerization, stereochemistry.
