Dual-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) containing both functionalized cation and anion offer scope for tuning of nucleation and growth steps to achieve crystallographic control. BaMoO4 crystals synthesized in alkyl methylimidazolium trifluoroacetate ([Cnmim]TA, n = 4, 8, 16) aqueous solution display the similar shuttle-like shape. The size of building blocks assembling into the hierarchical architectures has been influenced by the inhibiting effect of the imidazolium substituent alkyl chain. With the increase of imidazolium substituent alkyl chain length, the building blocks change from the truncated octahedron to the nanosheet. The single-crystalline BaMoO4 dendrites were prepared under the direction of [Omim]TA via the oriented attachment mechanism. BaMoO4 porous structures have been successfully synthesized in the [Omim]TA aqueous solution via the manipulation of the growth kinetics. Whether the resultant holes in the BaMoO4 structure are open or clogged depends upon variations in the molar ratio [Ba2+]/[Mo7O246–]. Shuttle-like BaMoO4 crystals made of nanosheets with the helical growth features have been successfully synthesized in the presence of [C16mim]TA. In addition, the amount of [C16mim]TA in the solution profoundly influences the morphology and size of the as-obtained products.

We report the synthesis of Ag–ZnO hybrid plasmonic nanostructures with enhanced photocatalytic activity by a facile wet-chemical method. The structural, optical, plasmonic and photocatalytic properties of the Ag–ZnO hybrid nanostructures were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL) and UV–visible absorption spectroscopy. The effects of citrate concentration and Ag nanoparticle loading on the photocatalytic activity of Ag–ZnO hybrid nanostructures towards sun-light driven degradation of methylene blue (MB) have been investigated. Increase in citrate concentration has been found to result in the formation of nanodisk-like structures, due to citrate-assisted oriented attachment of ZnO nanoparticles. The decoration of ZnO nanostructures with Ag nanoparticles resulted in a significant enhancement of the photocatalytic degradation efficiency, which has been found to increase with the extent of Ag nanoparticle loading.

We herein demonstrated the preparation of nickel sulfide hierarchical architectures via an emulsion-assisted route in hydrothermal system. Scanning electron microscope images of the products at different reaction stages indicated that the construction of the nanostructured hierarchical nickel sulfide was accomplished through oriented attachment accompanied by an encapsulation procedure, and the as-obtained products exhibited uniform architectures assembled by various primary units (e.g. nanorods, nanosheets). In addition, the effect of different surfactants on the shape of nickel sulfide nanostructures was further studied. The results indicated that the hierarchical architectures can only be achieved with the assistance of anionic surfactant (e.g. sodium dodecyl sulfate). These as-prepared novel hierarchical nanostructures may be used in various areas, including industrial catalysis, and energy storage etc.
