Abstract. The Sunset semi-continuous carbon analyzer (SCCA) is an instrument widely used for carbonaceous aerosol measurement. Despite previous validation work, in this study we identified a new type of SCCA calculation discrepancy caused by the default multipoint baseline correction method. When exceeding a certain threshold carbon load, multipoint correction could cause significant total carbon (TC) underestimation. This calculation discrepancy was characterized for both sucrose and ambient samples, with two protocols based on IMPROVE (Interagency Monitoring of PROtected Visual Environments) (i.e., IMPshort and IMPlong) and one NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health)-like protocol (rtNIOSH). For ambient samples, the IMPshort, IMPlong and rtNIOSH protocol underestimated 22, 36 and 12% of TC, respectively, with the corresponding threshold being ~ 0, 20 and 25 μgC. For sucrose, however, such discrepancy was observed only with the IMPshort protocol, indicating the need of more refractory SCCA calibration substance. Although the calculation discrepancy could be largely reduced by the single-point baseline correction method, the instrumental blanks of single-point method were higher. The correction method proposed was to use multipoint-corrected data when below the determined threshold, and use single-point results when beyond that threshold. The effectiveness of this correction method was supported by correlation with optical data.

Abstract A new application of continuous wavelet transform (CWT) to overlapping peaks in a chromatogram was developed for the quantitative analysis of amiloride hydrochloride (AML) and hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) in tablets. Chromatographic analysis was done by using an ACQUITY ultra-performance LC (UPLC) BEH C18 column (50 × 2.1 mm id, 1.7 μm particle size) and a mobile phase consisting of methanol–0.1 M acetic acid (21 + 79, v/v) at a constant flow rate of 0.3 mL/min with diode array detection at 274 nm. The overlapping chromatographic peaks of the calibration set consisting of AML and HCT mixtures were recorded rapidly by using an ACQUITY UPLC H-Class system. The overlapping UPLC data vectors of AML and HCT drugs and their samples were processed by CWT signal processing methods. The calibration graphs for AML and HCT were computed from the relationship between concentration and areas of chromatographic CWT peaks. The applicability and validity of the improved UPLC-CWT approaches were confirmed by recovery studies and the standard addition technique. The proposed UPLC-CWT methods were applied to the determination of AML and HCT in tablets. The experimental results indicated that the suggested UPLC-CWT signal processing provides accurate and precise results for industrial QC and quantitative evaluation of AML-HCT tablets.

Plant hormones have been identified to be versatile signaling molecules essential for plant growth, development, and stress response. Their content levels vary depending on the species, and they also change in response to any external stimuli. Thus, simultaneous quantification of multiple plant hormones is required to understand plant physiology. Sensitive and quantitative analysis using liquid chromatography-linked mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has been used in detecting plant hormones; however, quantification without stable isotopes is yet to be established. In this study, we quantified seven representative plant hormones of Lotus japonicus, which is a model legume for standard addition method. Accurate masses for monoisotopic ions of seven phytohormones were determined for high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS). Selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode based on accurate masses was used in detecting phytohormones in the roots, stems, and leaves. Evaluation of matrix effects showed ion suppression ranging from 10.2% to 87.3%. Both stable isotope dilution and standard addition methods were able to detect plant hormones in the roots, stems, and leaves, with no significant differences in using both approaches and thus a standard addition method can be used to quantify phytohormones in L. japonicus. The method will be effective, especially when stable isotopes are not available to correct for matrix effects.

In this paper, a new method of baseline correction on strong motion acceleration records is presented and the fundamental concept for baseline corrections on the earthquake strong motions is described. Considering the filtering effect, the earthquakes ground motion displacements of 1995 JMA KOBE, 1999 Kocaeli YPT and 1999 Chi-Chi TCU068 are discussed. Also, the linear sloshing responses of large liquid tanks subjected to these motions were discussed. Since liquid storage tanks show the low frequency (long period) sloshing characteristics and the strong motion characteristics of 1999 Kocaeli and Chi-Chi earthquakes are also low frequencies and large permanent displacements, the sloshing responses in large liquid tanks, especially in long natural periods, were significantly affected by the low frequency motions (large permanent displacements) of these devastating earthquakes. It is very important to use suitable ground motion characterized low frequency content for earthquake resistant design of liquid storage tanks. The baseline correction method presented in the paper may be adequately used to correct strong motion records for large liquid storage design.

In this work, different soil samples were extracted from seven sites in the vicinity of the Northwest China Lead–Zinc Smelter. A simplified standard addition method with LIBS (SAM-LIBS) was proposed to carry out quantitative analysis of Pb in solid soil samples. The method proposed in this work can be used for rapid assessment of the contaminants in soils.
