ABSTRACTA solid state multinuclear NMR study of the sol-gel process was performed using the molecular building blocks tetramethoxysilane, hexamethoxydisiloxane, octamethoxytrisiloxane and octamethoxyoctasilsesquioxane as precursor monomers. Water content, solvent content, and hydrolysis/condensation processes were monitored using 17O, 13C, and 29Si FT, FTMAS and CPMAS NMR techniques.

We report here the synthesis and structural characterization of a novel expanded Schiff base oligopyrrolic macrocycle TxLH (i.e. compound 2) along with its smaller congener hemi-TxLH (i.e. compound 1). The solid-state structure of TxLH is reminiscent of the shape of a Texas Longhorn[Formula: see text]. It thus defines a new architectural form for porphyrin analogues. The present study thus underscores the potential of using functionalized oligopyrroles as readily accessible molecular building blocks for the construction of structurally non-trivial molecules.

AbstractKCl72H2SeO3 and CsCl7H2SeO3 have been synthesized using solution evaporation methods from aqueous solution. Both compounds are monoclinic (P2/n and P21/c) and demonstrate new structure types. One symmetrically unique SeO(OH)2 molecule is present in each structure. SeO(OH)2 molecules via strong hydrogen bonds form chains in KCl72H2SeO3 and layers in ?sCl7H2SeO3. The structures of KCl72H2SeO3 and CsCl7H2SeO3 can be described as consisting of ionic KCl chains and CsCl layers incorporated into the covalent- and hydrogen-bonded H2SeO3 matrix. To the best of our knowledge, the cases when selenious acid acts as a contributor to the molecular building blocks of salt-inclusion structures are not known to date.

This report presents the single crystal X-ray structures of several substituted isoindolines that have been frequently used as starting materials for phthalocyanines, phthalocyanine analogs and related chelates. The structures of 1,3-diiminoisoindoline (1), 1,3-bis(hydroxyimino)isoindoline (2), 1,4-diaminophthalazine (3), 1,1,3-trichloroisoindoline (4) and 3-imino-1-oxoisoindoline (5) are reported; compounds 2 and 3 are synthesized from diiminoisoindoline (1) and 4 and 5 are produced from phthalimide. All five compounds are planar macrocycles, and localization of double bonds can be readily determined. We elucidated one of the known structures of 1 at low temperature, and observed two additional new structures of 1. For the crystal forms of 1 and compounds 2, 3, and 5, hydrogen bonding in the solid state was observed. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 form extended hydrogen bonded arrays in the solid state, whereas 5 forms discrete hydrogen bonded dimers.
