A single crystal to single crystal [2+2] photodimerization has been achieved within a molecular cocrystal composed of finite, hydrogen-bonded molecular assemblies using the absorption-edge irradiation technique. The cocrystal is composed of a resorcinol template and a diolefin reactant that reacts to form a non-symmetrical cyclobutane product. The product is an intermediate in a two-step solid-state synthesis of a [2.2]paracyclophane. The ability to conduct the reaction in a single crystal to single crystal fashion attests to the robustness of the hydrogen-bonded assemblies during the course of the solid-state transformation.

Abstract The formation reaction of Mg2Mo3O11 from MgO (single crystal) and MoO3 (pellet) has been investigated in the temperature range 873-973 K.Supported by an analysis of the transport properties a mechanism is proposed involving a unidirectional transport of Mo6+ via V6′Mo and of oxygen via gas phase. The transport properties of MgMoO4 (the other intermediate compound in the system MgO-MoO3) were also studied and the results were found to agree with the mechanism observed in a previous work on the basis of kinetic and structural considerations.

A novel two-dimensional (2D) ZnII coordination framework, poly[[μ-1,3-bis(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene](μ-5-nitrobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato)zinc(II)], [Zn(C8H3NO6)(C14H14N4)] n or [Zn(NO2-BDC)(1,3-BMIB)] n [1,3-BMIB is 1,3-bis(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene and NO2-H2BDC is 5-nitrobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid], has been prepared and characterized by IR, elemental analysis, thermal analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the compound is a new 2D polymer with a 63 topology parallel to the (10\overline{2}) crystal planes based on left-handed helices, right-handed helical NO2-BDC–Zn chains and [Zn2(1,3-BMIB)2] n clusters. In the crystal, adjacent layers are further connected by C—H...O hydrogen bonds, C—H...π interactions, C—O...π interactions and N—O...π interactions to form a three-dimensional structure in the solid state. In addition, the compound exhibits strong fluorescence emissions in the solid state at room temperature.

Modification of the magnetic properties in a solid-state material upon external stimulus has attracted much attention in the recent years for their potential applications as switches and sensors. Within the field of coordination polymers, gas sorption studies typically focus on porous solids, with the gas molecules accommodating in the channels. Here we present a 1D non-porous coordination polymer capable of incorporating HCl gas molecules, which not only causes a reordering of its atoms in the solid state but also provokes dramatic changes in the magnetic behaviour. Subsequently, a further solid-gas transformation can occur with the extrusion of HCl gas molecules causing a second structural rearrangement which is also accompanied by modification in the magnetic path between the metal centres. Unequivocal evidence of the two-step magnetostructural transformation is provided by X-ray single-crystal diffraction.
