This paper is the first of three parts summarizing the research to use diffractive optics at the CO2 laser wavelength to drill microvias in the 40–50 μm range for organic packaging applications. This first part mainly focuses on mathematical modeling of the drilling process, which is used to define the characteristics of the laser beam necessary to achieve the required geometry of the microvias. These laser characteristics and the properties of the incoming laser beam of the CO2 laser system are then used to provide a deterministic approach for obtaining performance data for the diffractive optics design. The targeted optics are designed based on the modeling result and are then integrated into a prototype system to execute the drilling operation. The model is based on the conversion of optical energy into thermal energy due to laser-substrate interaction, propagation of thermal energy in the substrate, thermal as well as radiation damage threshold of the substrate and other important laser drilling parameters (e.g., fluence, temporal and spatial characteristics of the beam, residue at the via bottom).

ABSTRACT Objective To describe the results of treatment with CO2 laser for Bartholin gland cysts. Methods Thirty-one women with Bartholin gland cysts were treated with CO2laser at an outpatient´s setting. Skin incision was performed with focused laser beam, the capsule was opened to drain mucoid content, followed by internal vaporization of impaired capsule. Results There were no complications. Five patients had recurrence of the cyst and were submitted to a second and successful session. Conclusion CO2 laser surgery was effective to treat Bartholin gland cysts with minimal or no complications, and can be performed at an outpatient´s setting.

Abstract A 1178 J near diffraction limited 527 nm laser is realized in a complete closed-loop adaptive optics (AO) controlled off-axis multi-pass amplification laser system. Generated from a fiber laser and amplified by the pre-amplifier and the main amplifier, a 1053 nm laser beam with the energy of 1900 J is obtained and converted into a 527 nm laser beam by a KDP crystal with 62% conversion efficiency, 1178 J and beam quality of 7.93 times the diffraction limit (DL). By using a complete closed-loop AO configuration, the static and dynamic wavefront distortions of the laser system are measured and compensated. After correction, the diameter of the circle enclosing 80% energy is improved remarkably from 7.93DL to 1.29DL. The focal spot is highly concentrated and the 1178 J, 527 nm near diffraction limited laser is achieved.
