AbstractThe magnetic properties of matter continue to be a vibrant research area driven both by scientific curiosity to unravel the basic physical processes which govern magnetism and the vast and diverse utilization of magnetic materials in current and future devices, e.g., in information and sensor technologies. Relevant length and time scales approach fundamental limits of magnetism and with state-of-the-art synthesis approaches we are able to create and tailor unprecedented properties. Novel analytical tools are required to match these advances and soft X-ray probes are among the most promising ones. Strong and element-specific magnetic X-ray dichroism effects as well as the nanometer wavelength of photons and the availability of fsec short and intense X-ray pulses at upcoming X-ray sources enable unique experimental opportunities for the study of magnetic behavior. This article provides an overview of recent achievements and future perspectives in magnetic soft X-ray spectromicroscopies which permit us to gain spatially resolved insight into the ultrafast spin dynamics and the magnetic properties of buried interfaces of advanced magnetic nanostructures.

A new method has been established for the preparation of C 2-oxidized 5,5-spiroacetals, which are key intermediates for the synthesis of the bis-spiroacetal moiety of the spirolides. A bridged orthoester was used as a masked carboxylic acid in the preparation of these bicyclic oxaspirolactones. The synthesis of chiral lactone (12), a building block for the synthesis of the spirolides, is also reported. The two chiral centres in lactone (12) were assembled by addition of a chiral crotyl borane to an aldehyde. The structure of lactone (12) was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction; orthorhombic space group P212121 (No. 19), a 12.437(2), b 23.881(4), c 7.545(1) Å, V 2240.9(5) Å3, R(F) 0.0460, and Rw(F) 0.0458.

An easy access to 1,8-dichloro-10-(ethynyl)anthracene is reported, which is widely applicable for building up rigid linkers between two 1,8-dichloroanthracene units. For this, 1,8-dichloroanthren-10(9H)-one was reacted with ethynylmagnesium bromide in the presence of CeCl3; the yield was 65%. This building block was used as a substrate in (cross-)coupling reactions and some examples of linked 1,8-dichloroanthracen-10-yls (e.g., 1,8-bis[(1,8-dichloroanthracen-10-yl)-ethynyl]naphthalene or 1,2-bis[(1,8-dichloroanthracen-10-yl)ethynyl]-benzene) were synthesized in good to moderate yields. Linked 1,8-dichloroanthracen-10-yl derivatives were also synthesized by cross-coupling reactions using 10-bromo-1,8-dichloroanthracene and doubly ethynyl-substituted substrates. Linkers between the 1,8-dichloroanthracene units were: butadiynediyl, dimethylsilyldiethynyl, octa-1,7-diyne-1,8-diyl, propane-1,3-diylbis(dimethylsilyl)diethynyl, benzene-1,2-diethynyl, naphthalene-1,8-diyldiethynyl, and anthracene-1,8-diyldiethynyl. The new anthracene compounds were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and, in part, by X-ray diffraction experiments.
