Our ability to deliver high-quality cancer care is increasingly influenced by our ability to understand and manage the costs of care. Though there are considerable differences in the ways healthcare is financed and administered in different nations, there is a common need to deliver high-quality care at sustainable costs. This chapter reviews recent estimates of the aggregate costs of cancer care, discusses methods for determining cost-effectiveness or value in cancer care, provides a framework for understanding the components of cost at the societal and individual levels, and discusses efforts to control cost while preserving or improving both quality and outcomes.

Since the advent of precision instruments and safe techniques for direct laryngoscopic surgery under general anesthesia, indirect laryngeal surgery has become very uncommon. A review of the recent literature finds that few authors advocate indirect surgery under topical anesthesia, and many otolaryngologists dismiss this technique as being either of only historical interest or an idiosyncratic method practiced only by a handful of clinicians. The societal mandate for cost-effective healthcare and the availability of relatively low-cost, high-quality endoscopes and video equipment warrant a renewed and broader interest in this type of surgery. In this article, we review a series of 27 indirect surgical procedures performed under topical anesthesia in the clinical voice laboratory. We discuss the indications, outcomes, advantages, and disadvantages of this surgery, and we present a brief analysis of its cost-effectiveness. We conclude that indirect laryngeal surgery in the clinical voice laboratory is an effective, safe, efficient, and less costly alternative to some procedures routinely performed under general anesthesia.

The rapid adoption of robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALP) has occurred despite a lack of high-quality evidence demonstrating its oncologic advantages, safety, or cost effectiveness compared with open radical retropubic prostatectomy (ORP). This review examines the current literature comparing ORP and RALP, focusing on perioperative, oncologic, functional, and economic outcomes.

The main goals in dental practice are the high quality of the work, reductionof the risk of medical errors and effective diagnosis and treatment of oral tissues diseases; the whole multilevel system of medical care is willing to increase these indicators. Therefore, it is important to find ways to improve and maintain the dental care for the population [1]. One of these ways is the implementation of dental care standards. These standards are developed by the Dental Association of Russia and updated in 2018. There are specific algorithms and clinical recommendations for the treatment of patients with pulp and periapical tissue diseases

Abstract Background To review the literature on economic evaluations of public health interventions targeting prevention of mental health problems and suicide, to support evidence based societal resource allocation. Methods A systematic review of economic evaluations within mental health and suicide prevention was conducted including studies published between 2000 and 2018. The studies were identified through Medline, PsychINFO, Web of Science. The quality of relevant studies and the transferability of their results were assessed using a criterion set out by the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment. Results Nineteen studies of moderate to high quality were included in this review, which evaluated 18 interventions in mental health and 4 interventions in suicide prevention. Fourteen (63%) of all interventions were cost-effective. None of the studies that evaluated suicide prevention was of high quality. The interventions largely focused on psychological interventions at school, the workplace and within elderly care as well as screening and brief interventions in primary care. Nine studies (around 50% of included articles) had a high potential for transferability to the Swedish context. Conclusions Public health interventions aiming to improve mental health have a high potential to be economically beneficial to society, but high-quality evidence on the cost-effectiveness of suicide prevention is limited. Key messages Public health interventions aiming to improve mental health have a high potential to be economically beneficial to society. Evidence on the cost-effectiveness of suicide prevention is limited.
