The concept of disease-modifier genes as an element of genetic heterogeneity has been widely accepted and reported. The aim of the current study is to investigate the association between the promoter polymorphism TPH1 (rs10488682) and progression of idiopathic scoliosis (IS) in Eastern European population sample. A total of 105 patients and 210 healthy gender-matched controls were enrolled in this study. The TPH1 promoter polymorphism was genotyped by amplification followed by restriction. The statistical analysis was performed by Fisher’s Exact Test. The results indicated that the genotypes and alleles of TPH1 (rs10488682) are not correlated with curve severity, curve pattern, or bracing. Therefore, the examined polymorphic variant could not be considered as a genetic factor with modifying effect of IS. In conclusion, this case-control study revealed no statistically significant association between TPH1 (rs10488682) and progression of IS in Eastern European population sample. These preliminary results should be replicated in extended population studies including larger sample sizes. The identification of molecular markers for IS could be useful for a more accurate prognosis of the risk for a rapid progression of the curve. That would permit early stage treatment of the patient with the least invasive procedures.

AbstractThe European population is aging and their declining capacity makes older Europeans more dependent on the availability of care. Male and female health needs at older ages are different, yet there are contradictory results on the study of gender inequalities in health among the older European population. The aim of this article is twofold: first, we study whether there is a general gender health gap at older ages across Europe. Secondly, we analyze the existence of an increasing or decreasing universal association between the gender health gap and age among the older European population or whether, by contrast, this depends on the type of welfare state. To achieve these goals, we use data from the Survey on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) for respondents aged 50 and over in 2015, and we carry out several multilevel random intercept logistic regressions for European countries. Our results show that when we split European countries into groups according to the type of welfare state, we only find a significant gender health gap in older people in Southern and Social Democratic countries. Some differences have been found in the links between the gender health gap and age among European countries. Old women report worse health than men at all ages in Southern countries while in Social Democratic states it is only true for women aged 80 and over. In Bismarckian states there are barely any gender differences, while the gender health gap has no clearly defined bias. Between the ages of 60 and 79, men from Eastern European countries report poorer health, while after 80 it is women who report poorer health. In general, we found the widest gender inequalities in health for the oldest population group, especially in Southern and Eastern European countries.

ABSTRACTThe complete understanding of the genomic contribution to complex traits, diseases, and response to treatments, as well as genomic medicine application to the well-being of all humans will be achieved through the global variome that encompasses fine-scale genetic diversity. Despite significant efforts in recent years, uneven representation still characterizes genomic resources and among the underrepresented European populations are the Western Balkans including the Serbian population. Our research addresses this gap and presents the first ever dataset of variants in clinically relevant genes in the population sample of contemporary Serbia. A few variants significantly more frequent in the analyzed sample population compared to the European population as a whole are distinguished as its unique genetic determinants. We explored thoroughly their potential functional impact and its correlation with the health burden of the population of Serbia. Our variant’s catalogue improves the understanding of genetics of modern Serbia, contributes to application of precision medicine and health equity. In addition, this resource may also be applicable in neighboring regions and in worldwide functional analyses of genetic variants in individuals of European descent.

Aim of the study was to investigate the associations of polymorphisms of some genes with overweight and some anthropometric and biochemical indicators in a population sample of the young population of Novosibirsk. Material and methods. The study was carried out on a sample of young people aged 25–35 years, residents of Novosibirsk, selected by the method of random numbers (n = 319). During the survey, a questionnaire was filled out, anthropometric measurements, blood sampling, followed by biochemical and molecular genetic studies were carried out. Results. The odds ratio (OR) to detect a carrier of the AA rs9939609 genotype of the FTO gene in the group with an increased body mass index (BMI) compared to the group with a normal BMI is 2.1 times higher (95% confidence interval (95 % CI) 1.2– 3.8; p = 0.019 in the AA vs AT+TT model). In the Kruskal – Wallis test in the general group, differences were found in carriers of different rs9939609 genotypes of the FTO gene in the thickness of the skin fold in the middle third of the right shoulder (p = 0.0008) and under the right shoulder blade (p = 0.026). In carriers of the AA genotype, these indicators were noticeably higher compared to carriers of the AT and TT genotypes. Differences in high density lipoprotein cholesterol were found in women (p = 0.032; the lowest level in the AA genotype) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (p = 0.027; the highest value in the AA genotype). In addition, female carriers of the TT rs7903146 genotype of the TCF7L2 gene had lower diastolic blood pressure than carriers of the CT and CC genotypes (p = 0.027). The probability of detecting a male carrier of the CT or TT genotypes of the TCF7L2 gene polymorphism rs7903146 in the obese group is 0.313 (95 % CI 0.102–0.955; p = 0.036 in the CC vs CT+TT model) compared with the group with excess BMI (25 ≤ BMI < 30 kg/m2 ). The probability of detecting the allele with rs10811661 of the CDKN2AB gene in the obese group is 2.2 times higher (95 % CI 1.1–4.5; p = 0.035) compared with the group with an excess BMI. Conclusion. The association of overweight in the population sample of the young population of Novosibirsk was confirmed with rs9939609 of the FTO gene, rs7903146 of the TCF7L2 gene, rs10811661 of the CDKN2AB gene. The association of rs2237892 of the KCNQ1 gene and rs1111875 of the HHEX gene with overweight was not found. Associations of the studied SNPs with some anthropometric and biochemical indicators were found.

To date, there are no scales measuring work–home interaction which are adapted for the Eastern European population. Owing to the significantly different sociocultural contexts and geopolitical history between Western and Eastern populations, despite the massive contemporary East–West migration, a more culturally appropriate scale is needed to ensure valid and reliable measurement of the construct. This article presents the adaptation of the Survey Work–Home Interaction—NijmeGen (SWING) for the Romanian population. The results show that SWING can successfully measure work–home interaction for this population. Gender equivalence is also discussed.

Abstract Background Normative reference values for echocardiographic chamber quantification are of great importance; however, this can be challenging. Our aim was to derive these values including degrees of abnormality from a random Central European population sample with a homogeneous subset of healthy subjects. Methods We analysed echocardiograms obtained in a randomly selected population sample during the Czech post-MONICA survey in 2007/2008. Overall, 1850 out of 2273 persons of the whole sample of three districts had adequate echocardiograms (81.4%). A healthy subgroup defined by the absence of known cardiovascular disease was used to define normal reference range limits (n = 575, median age 42 years [IQR 34–52], 57% females). The whole population sample with predefined percentile cut-offs was used to define degrees of abnormality. Results Left ventricular (LV) size tended to decrease with age, while LV mass increased with age in both males and females and in both the healthy and general populations. LV dimensions were larger in males, except for body surface area-indexed LV diameter. M-mode derived LV measurements were larger and LV mass higher compared to 2D measurements. Right ventricle basal dimension was larger in males. Conclusions Our study provides reference ranges for echocardiographic measurements obtained in a healthy subgroup derived from an epidemiological study of a Central European population. Where feasible, degrees of abnormality are provided based on the whole population sample including patients with disease. Our data show that age, gender and measurement method significantly affect cardiac dimensions and function and should be always taken into account.
