Consolidation of spatial and episodic memories is thought to rely on replay of neuronal activity sequences during sleep. However, the network dynamics underlying the initial storage of memories during wakefulness have never been tested. Although slow, behavioral time scale sequences have been claimed to sustain sequential memory formation, fast (“theta”) time scale sequences, nested within slow sequences, could be instrumental. We found that in rats traveling passively on a model train, place cells formed behavioral time scale sequences but theta sequences were degraded, resulting in impaired subsequent sleep replay. In contrast, when the rats actively ran on a treadmill while being transported on the train, place cells generated clear theta sequences and accurate trajectory replay during sleep. Our results support the view that nested sequences underlie the initial formation of memory traces subsequently consolidated during sleep.

The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease often begin on one side of the body and continue to do so as the disease progresses. First SPECT results in 4 patients with hemiparkinsonism using 99mTc-HMPAO as perfusion marker are reported. Three patients exhibited reduced tracer uptake in the contralateral basal ganglia One patient who was under therapy for 1 year, showed a different perfusion pattern with reduced uptake in both basal ganglia. These results might indicate reduced perfusion secondary to reduced striatal neuronal activity.

ABSTRACT The initial distribution of radioactive C was studied in the cell fractions of the liver, kidney, testes and thigh muscles after intraperitoneal injection of testosterone-4-14C into 40 day old male rats. To make this possible, the absolute and specific activity values (μc/mg C) were determined. After both ten and twenty minutes the cytoplasm fractions possessed the highest activity values, the only exception being the specific activity of the liver cytoplasm ten minutes after injection when the microsomes of the liver showed a higher activity. After 20 min the mitochondria possessed the highest specific activity values among the corpuscular fractions. The specific activity values in the microsomes of all four organs studied were lower 20 min after the time of injection than after 10 min, a fact, which is suspected to be the result of the initial formation of conjugates in the microsomes.
