The mouse genes En-1 and En-2 display sequence similarity, in and around the homeobox region, to the engrailed family in Drosophila. This paper describes their pattern of expression in the 12.5-day mouse embryo as determined by in situ hybridization. En-2 is expressed in a subset of cells expressing En-1. Both genes are expressed in the developing midbrain and its junction with the hindbrain. In addition, En-1 is expressed in the floor of the hindbrain, a restricted ventrolateral segment of the neural tube throughout the trunk and anterior part of the tail, the dermatome of tail somites, the centrum and costal processes in developing vertebrae, a restricted region of facial mesenchyme and the limb-bud ectoderm. Supplementary studies of 9.5-day and 10.5-day embryos showed that the same pattern of expression pertained in the neural tube, but that expression in the somites is at first confined to the dermatome and later found at a low level in restricted sclerotomal regions. Both genes are expressed in restricted domains which do not cross tissue-type boundaries. In several instances, however, boundaries of expression lie within morphologically undifferentiated tissue. These results suggest that En-1 and En-2 may be involved in the establishment or maintenance of the spatial integrity of specific domains within developing tissues.

During rat embryogenesis, PDGF alpha receptor (PDGF-alpha R) mRNA is expressed in the ventral half of the spinal cord in two longitudinal columns, one each side of the central canal. Initially, these columns are only two cells wide but the cells subsequently appear to proliferate and disseminate throughout the spinal cord. Our previous studies of PDGF-alpha R expression in the developing CNS suggested that PDGF-alpha R may be a useful marker of the oligodendrocyte lineage in situ. The data presented here complement those studies and lead us to propose that the earliest oligodendrocyte precursors in the spinal cord originate in a very restricted region of the ventricular zone during a brief window of time around embryonic day 14 (E14). In the embryonic brain, migrating PDGF-alpha R+ cells appear to originate in a localized germinal zone in the ventral diencephalon (beneath the foramen of Monro). Our data demonstrate that gene expression and cell fate can be regulated with exquisite spatial resolution along the dorsoventral axis of the mammalian neural tube.

Most recent studies show the impact of violations in the metabolism of folate and metin period in the pathogenesis of neural tube defects (NTD) of the fetus. Metafolin has a number of advantages, which primarily includes direct intake of substances in biologically active form and the optimum effect, even in the case when the patient homozygote and/or heterozygote genotype 677С T polymorphism in MTHFR. With the aim of prevention and treatment of various pathological conditions related to folate deficiency during pregnancy, it is advisable to apply vitamin-mineral complexes, containing metafolin - active form of folate with high bioavailability.
