Optical modes that carry orbital angular momentum (OAM) are routinely produced external to the laser cavity and have found a variety of applications, thus increasing the demand for integrated solutions for their production. Yet such modes are notoriously difficult to produce from lasers due to the strict symmetry requirements for their creation, together with the need to break the degeneracy in helicity. Here, we review the progress made since 1992 in producing such twisted light modes directly at the source, from gas to solid-state lasers, bulk to integrated on-chip solutions, through to generic devices for on-demand OAM in both scalar and vector forms. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Optical orbital angular momentum’.

Abstract Dissipative Kerr soliton microcomb has been recognized as a promising on-chip multi-wavelength laser source for fiber optical communications, as its comb lines possess frequency and phase stability far beyond the independent lasers. In the scenarios of coherent optical transmission and interconnect, a highly beneficial but rarely explored target is to re-generate a Kerr soliton microcomb at the receiver side as local oscillators that conserve the frequency and phase property of the incoming data carriers, so that to enable coherent detection with minimized optical and electrical compensations. Here, by using the techniques of pump laser conveying and two-point locking, we implement re-generation of a Kerr soliton microcomb that faithfully clones the frequency and phase coherence of another microcomb sent from 50 km away. Moreover, leveraging the coherence-cloned soliton microcombs as carriers and local oscillators, we demonstrate terabit coherent data interconnect, wherein traditional digital processes for frequency offset estimation is totally dispensed with, and carrier phase estimation is substantially simplified via slowed-down phase estimation rate per channel and joint phase estimation among multiple channels. Our work reveals that, in addition to providing a multitude of laser tones, regulating the frequency and phase of Kerr soliton microcombs among transmitters and receivers can significantly improve optical coherent communication in terms of performance, power consumption, and simplicity.

Abstract Optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) represents the development of optical communication. The advantages of OCDMA such as, asynchronous multiuser communication transmission, flexibility, ample bandwidth and scalability; have made this technique a better candidate to be proposed for next generation network on chip. In this paper, performance of on-chip OCDMA communication system is analyzed. Analytical techniques for estimating the performance of optical communication systems are difficult, complicated and no complete analytical treatment of the problem has been obtained before. Simulation techniques such as Monte Carlo (MC) are used to obtain reasonable estimates of these systems performance. For optical communications, Monte Carlo require excessively large sample sizes which makes it cumbersome in terms of physical resources, and are not practical for estimating very low values of error probabilities. Modified Monte-Carlo (Importance sampling/IS) method was used to reduce the number of simulation tests for estimating error probabilities for optical communications systems by modifying the probability density function of the on-chip noise process. Simulation results are presented and assessed in term of bit error rate (BER), showing the contribution of IS relatively to MC.

Steering electromagnetic scattering by subwavelength objects is usually accompanied by the excitation of electric and magnetic modes. The Kerker effect, which relies on the precise overlapping between electric and magnetic multipoles, is a potential approach to address this challenge. However, fundamental limitations on the reconfigurability and tunability challenge their future implementation in practical applications. Here, we demonstrate a design approach by applying coherent control to a silicon nanodisk. By utilizing an experimentally feasible two-wave excitation, this coherent light-by-light control enables a highly reconfigurable, broadband, and tunable transverse scattering, extending the feasibility of unidirectional scattering in various practical scenarios, including on-chip integrations and optical communications.
