The paper describes the characteristics of the equatorial electrojet at Huancayo (HUA, 12.1oS, 75.3oW, inclination 1.5oN, declination 1.0oE) in western side of South America, where the geomagnetic field is aligned almost along the geographic meridian, and at Itinga (ITI, 4.3oS, 47.oW, inclination 1.4oN, declination 19.3oW) in eastern part of South America, where the geomagnetic field is aligned about 19o west of the geographic meridian; although the mean intensity of the magnetic field in the two regions are almost of the same order. Further comparisons are made of the current at Itinga and at Tatuoca (TTB, 1.2oS, 48.5oW, inclination 7.8o N, declination 18.7oW), a low latitude station in the same longitude sector. The daily range of horizontal component of the geomagnetic field, H, is shown to be almost 16% higher at HUA compared to that at ITI. The daily variation of the eastward field, Y, showed a strong minimum of -40 nT around 13-14 hr LT at ITI whereas very low values were observed at HUA with a positive peak of about 4 nT around 11- 12 hr LT. The vertical field, Z, showed abnormally large negative values of -70 nT at TTB around 13 hr LT. The day-today fluctuations of midday and midnight values of X field were positively correlated between HUA and ITI with a high correlation coefficient of 0.78 and 0.88 respectively. Values of Y field were also significantly positively correlated between HUA and ITI for midnight hours (0.72), while no correlation was observed for the midday hours. The midnight values of X field at HUA, ITI and TTB showed significant (0.90 or greater) correlation with Dst index. Correlation values of about 0.7 were observed between Dst and midday values of X at ITI and TTB and to a lesser degree (0.4) at HUA.

Abstract. The availability of measurements of the geomagnetic field variations in Antarctica at three sites along the 80° S geomagnetic parallel, separated by approximately 1 h in magnetic local time, allows us to study the longitudinal dependence of the observed variations. In particular, using 1 min data from Mario Zucchelli Station, Scott Base and Talos Dome, a temporary installation during 2007–2008 Antarctic campaign, we investigated the diurnal variation and the low-frequency fluctuations (approximately in the Pc5 range, ∼ 1–7 mHz). We found that the daily variation is clearly ordered by local time, suggesting a predominant effect of the polar extension of midlatitude ionospheric currents. On the other hand, the pulsation power is dependent on magnetic local time maximizing around magnetic local noon, when the stations are closer to the polar cusp, while the highest coherence between pairs of stations is observed in the magnetic local nighttime sector. The wave propagation direction observed during selected events, one around local magnetic noon and the other around local magnetic midnight, is consistent with a solar-wind-driven source in the daytime and with substorm-associated processes in the nighttime.

A study has been, conducted at Ahmedabad during 1957 and 1958 of the time variations of meson intensity incident from east and west at 45° to the vertical. A characteristic differ­ence of about 6 h in the diurnal time of maximum for the east and west directions is observed to occur on many days and this has been interpreted as signifying an anisotropy of primary radiation caused by a source outside the influence of the geomagnetic field. However, there are many days on which the daily variation has a maximum near noon for both directions. On such days the predominant influence is that of a local source situated within the influence of the geomagnetic field. The local source is associated with geomagnetically disturbed days. Long-term changes in the daily variation are found to be similar for the east, vertical and west directions.

Penentuan model empiris hari tenang variasi medan geomagnet dikonstruksi berdasarkan data geomagnet dari stasiun geomagnet (SG) Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika (BMKG) Tondano, Manado. Hari tenang variasi medan geomagnet dinyatakan sebagai fungsi dari keempat komponen atau variabel yang mempengaruhinya yaitu: aktivitas matahari SA (solar activity), hari dalam setahun DOY (date of year), usia bulan LA (lunar age) dan waktu lokal LT (local time). Dalam bentuk matematis ditulis sebagai, EMQD ( SA, DOY, LA, LT ) = f(SA). g(DOY). h(LA). m(LT). Model empiris yang didasarkan pada fungsi kecocokan ini terdiri dari 270 bentuk ekspresi matematik. Sedangkan bentuk-bentuk ekspresi matematik ini juga mencakup proses-proses non-linier yang tak dapat diabaikan dalam model empiris hari tenang variasi medan geomagnet tersebut. Model empiris ini dapat ditiru atau dikonstruksi kembali pada suatu selang waktu yang relatif panjang (misalnya satu siklus matahari), asalkan kondisi geomagnet selalu berada dalam keadaan tenang. Kontribusi dari model empiris hari tenang ini akan memberikan informasi tentang gangguan geomagnet yang ada di stasiun geomagnet Tondano (Nilai Gangguan geomagnet = Nilai variasi medan geomagnet yang terukur – Nilai model empiris hari tenang). Dengan demikian model ini akan memberikan informasi gangguan geomagnet untuk operasi survey geomagnet disekitar stasiun geomagnet Tondano, Manado. The determination an empirical model of the quiet daily geomagnetic field variation that is constructed based on geomagnetic data from Tondano, Manado station geomagnetic This quiet daily of geomagnetic field variation was described as a function of four variables that its influence, these are solar activity (SA), day of year (DOY), lunar age (LA) and local time (LT). The empirical model based on this fitting function consist of 270 coefficients which included in expression form of mathematic. While, expression form of this mathematic also comprise nonlinear processes which can not minimized in the empirical model of the quiet daily geomagnetic field variation. This empirical model can be reconstructed on the time interval that is long relative (for example one solar cycle). Provided that, under geomagnetic quiet conditions. Contribution of this empirical model of the quiet daily variation is can give information about the existence of geomagnetic disturbance at Tondano (value of geomagnetic disturbance equal value of measurable geomagnetic field variation minus value of empirical model of the quiet daily variation). Thus, information about the existence of this geomagnetic disturbance very useful for necessity geomagnetic survey at Tondano, Manado geomagnetic station. <p>Geomagnetic field (GMF) variations from external sources are classified as regular diurnal or occurring during periods of disturbances. The most significant regular variations are the quiet solar daily variation (Sq) and the disturbance daily variation (SD). These variations have well recognized daily cycles and need to be accounted for before the analysis of the disturbed field. Preliminary analysis of the GMF variations shows that the principal component analysis (PCA) is a useful tool for extraction of regular variations of GMF; however the requirements to the data set length, geomagnetic activity level etc. need to be established.</p><p>Here we present preliminary results of the PCA-based Sq extraction procedure based on the analysis of the Coimbra Geomagnetic Observatory (COI) measurements of the geomagnetic field components H, X, Y and Z between 2007 and 2015. The PCA-based Sq curves are compared with the standard ones obtained using 5 IQD per month. PCA was applied to data sets of different length: either 1 month-long data set for one of 2007-2015 years or data series for the same month but from different years (2007-2015) combined together. For most of the analyzed years the first PCA mode (PC1) was identified as SD variation and the second mode (PC2) was identified as Sq variation.</p>
