The paper investigated the perceived influence of students’ demographic variables on their access to financial aids in public Universities in Rivers State, Nigeria. Six questions were formulated to guide the study and five hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. The design adopted for the study was an analytical survey. The population of the study included 78, 216 students (34,997 male and 43,219 female) in the three public Universities in Rivers State. The sample of the study covered 791 students (Male= 395 and Female= 396) selected through the random sampling technique while Taro Yamane method of sample size determination was used for determining the sample size. The instruments used for collecting responses from students were questionnaire and a ten items interview schedule. The research questions were answered using frequency, percentage and cumulative percentage. Findings of the study revealed that students’ demographic variables have an influence on their access to financial aids in public Universities in Rivers State, Nigeria. The implication of this is that the government’s expenditure on education will continue to increase in the absence of these alternative financial aids in the public Universities in Rivers State, Nigeria.

The present study was undertaken to determine the benefits derived by the respondents being a member of the PAU Tree Growers Association with a sample size of a total of 80 members of the association. The data were collected using an interview schedule pertaining to the benefits derived by the members. The results of the study revealed that the majority of the respondents had derived high technical benefits (96.25 percent), high personal benefits (86.25 percent), high social benefits (70 percent), and medium economic benefits (51.25 percent). Between the various benefits derived by them, technical benefits emerged as the major benefits (mean score =142.4) followed by social benefits (mean score=140.45), personal benefits (mean score=133), and economic benefits (mean score=98.44). Overall the members obtained high benefits from the association (56.25 percent).

The study attempted to find out the quality of the evaluation procedure of B.Ed. programme of Garhwal University, the Central University in view of NCTE Norms. The study also reveals the method and procedure of evaluation according to the latest 2 years B.Ed. programme. For the study, purposive sampling method was used. The tools – questionnaire and interview schedule was developed. On the basis of findings, it concluded that the evaluation procedure was in accordance with the NCTE Norms. With the implementation of two years B.Ed. course, the method of evaluation has also become more practical oriented, which has become a remarkable achievement and surely enhance the quality of prospective teachers

O Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), desenvolvido pela Organização Mundial de Saúde, tem sido utilizado para mensuração de nível de suspeição de transtornos mentais em estudos brasileiros, especialmente em grupos de trabalhadores. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desempenho do SRQ-20, com base em indicadores de validade (sensibilidade, especificidade, taxa de classificação incorreta e valores preditivos), e determinar o melhor ponto de corte para classificação dos transtornos mentais comuns na população estudada. O estudo incluiu 91 indivíduos selecionados aleatoriamente de um estudo de corte transversal realizado com população residente em áreas urbanas de Feira de Santana (BA). Entrevistas clínicas, realizadas por psicólogas, utilizando o Revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R), foi adotada como padrão-ouro. Na avaliação do desempenho do SRQ-20 foram estimados indicadores de validade (sensibilidade e especificidade). A curva Receiver Operator Characteristic Curve (ROC) foi utilizada para determinar o melhor ponto de corte para classificação de suspeitos/não suspeitos. O ponto de corte de melhor desempenho foi de 6/7 para a população investigada, revelando desempenho razoável com área sob a curva de 0,789. Os resultados indicam que o SRQ-20 possui característica discriminante regular.

Insomnia is one of the major and unsolved problems in older people. Most of the sleep studies report that the different forms of insomnia like Difficulty Initiating Sleep (DIS), Difficulty Maintaining Sleep (DMS) and Non-Restorative Sleep (NRS) are common among the elderly that are associated to many factors. The objective of the study was to measure the prevalence of insomnia and the factors associated to it among the elderly people. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 142 elderly people of and above 60 years of age in Sarangdanda VDC of Panchthar District of Eastern Nepal. The presence or absence of insomnia and the associated factors were assessed on them by the help of interview schedule. The results were analyzed using chi-square test in SPSS (version 11.5). DMS was the most common reported form of insomnia among the elderly followed by DIS and NRS. Association between insomnia and each of factors like use of tobacco before sleeping hours, eating too close to bedtime, use of tea/coffee before sleeping hours and use of alcohol before sleeping hours were statistically significant at 95% level of confidence. Insomnia affects a large proportion of elderly and is triggered by many factors like use of tobacco before sleeping hours, use of tea/coffee before sleeping hours, eating too close to bedtime and use of alcohol before sleeping hours. The present study was aimed at determining the constraints confronted by the farmers in livelihood diversification. The purposes of this study were to determine the extent and nature of livelihood diversification of the farmers and also to explore relationships of 13 selected characteristics of the farmers with their livelihood diversification. There were a total of 1270 farmers in the 5 villages constituted the population of the study, out of which 10 percent of the total farmers were selected through simple random sampling technique. This gave a sample size of 127 such farmers. Data were collected by the researcher himself with the help of pre-tested interview schedule during 15 February 2013 to 30 March, 2013. The livelihood diversification scores of the respondents ranged from 0.22 to 0.79 with an average of 0.41. It is seen that more than half of the farmers 53.5% had medium level of livelihood diversification compared to 19.7 percent of them having low livelihood diversification and 26.8 percent had high livelihood. Out of 13 selected characteristics of the farmers, seven of those viz. education, family education, income generating experience, household annual income, communication exposure, organizational participation and attitude towards livelihood diversification had positive significant relationship with livelihood diversification.
