Abstract This study examines the ways in which a pair of identical-looking fraternal twins – first-generation Indian-American adolescent male students at a private all-boys school – construct personal meaning, or textual relevance, as readers. Semi-structured interviews with the two young men were conducted to determine the degrees to which their connections to literature were influenced by a) their racial/ethnic/cultural identities, b) their gender identities, and/or c) other aspects of their identities. The brothers’ responses, which differ significantly from one another’s and demonstrate the complexities of constructing meaning from texts, provide new perspective on how to best reach individual students – particularly students from nondominant groups. The data indicates that educators would benefit significantly from including young people’s perspectives in attempts to represent them and their identities within literacy education contexts. Ultimately, this study calls for a broadened theory of reader response – one that accounts for student diversity, within and across groups, and encourages young people to share how their worlds impact their readings of the word.

Purpose: We explored mechanisms of paternal influence associated with adolescent male condom decision making and behavior within an integrated framework of social neurobiological and behavioral theories of condom use. Method: Self-administered surveys from Latino and Black adolescent males aged 15–19 years ( n = 191) and their fathers were obtained. Dyads were recruited using area sampling methodology. Analyses included multivariable logistic and ordinary least squares regression examining direct and indirect associations of adolescent decision-analytic and paternal influence factors with adolescent condomless sex in the past 3 months. Results: Notions of masculinity, low-risk perception, partner approval of, and self-efficacy for condomless sex were associated with engaging in unprotected sex. Adolescent males reported reduced odds of engaging in condomless sex when indicating greater levels of father–son communication, relationship satisfaction, and paternal monitoring. Conclusion: Father-based interventions grounded in integrated theoretical frameworks of behavioral decision making and neuroscience have the potential to promote condom use among adolescent males.

Collaborative Learning (CL) is an approach to teaching and learning that involves a group of learners working together. The study aims to assess collaborative learning effects in the 21st-century teaching-learning landscape, particularly on the students' cognitive, affective and psychomotor dimensions. This study utilized the descriptive-evaluative method of research with a validated questionnaire as the primary data gathering instrument. Results showed that females dominate male students as to their number in first and second-year levels. The majority of the respondents aged 20 and below have participated in various collaborative activities and assignments in and out of the class with a typical size of 5 to 7 group members. Collaborative learning found to have a very high effect on Students' Academic Learning (cognitive), Collaborative Skills (affective) and least on Skills development (psychomotor). The researchers recommend that male students be engaged in group dynamics and learning activities; it must involve teenagers and suffice their activities' preference. Activities that demand greater participation, drills and exercises, and thinking activities must allow the students to develop their cognitive, affective, and psychomotor dimensions for holistic learning.

Aim: To assess the relationship between dental fear and smoking among adolescents of 15-18 year of age in Pakistan Method: This study was a prospective crossectional survey design which was conducted in Lahore. After taking permission from the school’s head, data was collected from the male students of grade 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th using questionnaire and later on one of their parents was approached to fill the questionnaire. For this purpose, only one school was targeted. Sample size was of 200 participants whereas parents of all the student participants participated in the study. Results: The results of chi-square revealed that dental fear was quite high among male students, occasional use of tobacco, and use of mouthwash minimum thrice a day. It was also found that students of those parents whose occupational level was low reported higher dental fear. Conclusion: It was found that adolescent male students were found to have more dental fear who smoke tobacco as compared to those who do not smoke. It is important to ask about smoking habits as well as dental fear when examining oral health maintenance of adolescents. Keywords: Smoking, Tobacco, Adolescents, Dental fear

Learning to code is considered as a difficult and challenging task for a significant number of novice programmers in programming education. Novice programmers have to acquire different skills such as problem solving, program design, comprehension, and debugging at the same time. On the other hand, most introductory programming courses focus more on syntax of the programming language. In this study, we developed and introduced a ‘PROBSOL’ application in three different learning systems (E-learning, M-learning and Game-based learning) to enhance the problem solving skills of novice programmers in an introductory programming (IP) course. A survey was conducted with the IP students to determine their perception about all the three applications in the IP course. Gender differences were determined by comparing both female and male students’ responses for each question in the survey. The results of comparison show that male students were more satisfied with all the three applications compared to female students. Both female and male students perceived that all the three applications are user-friendly, enabled them to accomplish tasks more quickly, and enhanced their learning productivity. Overall, both male and female students appreciated all the three applications in the teaching and learning process of the IP course. This study implies that instructors can also use all the three applications as an additional teaching tool in the teaching and learning process of programming education.

This study aims to improve the ability of passing volleyball under class XI Mekatronika EPCOS SMK Negeri 1 Batam through the playing method. This type of research uses classroom action research. The subjects of this study were 20 people consisting of 13 male students and 7 female students. The research instrument used a rubric for the assessment of the volleyball passing performance. The results showed that there was an increase in conducting this research, so it was concluded that the playing method could improve the volleyball under-passing ability of class XI Mekatronika EPCOS SMK Negeri 1 Batam. It is hoped that this research can serve as a reference for the future or a reference in the teaching and learning process.

The author discussed the Indonesian language learning problem by incorporating the cooperative type jigsaw method in the teaching and learning process. The purpose of this study was to improve the learning outcomes of fifth-grade students at Beringin Jaya Elementary School using the jigsaw cooperative method. This research was conducted on the fifth-grade students of SDN 010 Beringin Jaya, with a total number of 20 students consisting of 12 female students and 8 male students. This research was conducted in 2 cycles starting from the end of March to May 2016. The results of the study showed that each cycle of teacher activity increased. It is seen that the teacher activity score in the first cycle got a score of 19 in the good category, and in the second cycle got a score of 23 categorized very well. Student activities from activities, in the first cycle, got a score of 20 categorized very well, and in the second cycle got a score of 22 very good categories. Additionally, the improvement of student learning outcomes was seen clearly, in the first cycle was 83.33%, while in the second cycle 91.66% of students completed. Thus, the use of the jigsaw cooperative method in Indonesian language learning can improve the learning outcomes of fifth-grade students of SDN 010 Beringin Jaya.


The purpose of this descriptive research study is to find out the perceptions of students and teachers about the problems and challenges in learning and teaching of English language in Madrassas located in urban area of District Mardan. The main objectives of the study are to assess the attitude of both the students and teachers towards English language; to find out the required facilities for the teaching and learning of English and to put forward the recommendations of the students and teachers for the eradication of the problems and challenges to English language learning and teaching in Madrassas. The population of the research study consist of all Madrassas and all male students and teachers in Urban Madrassas in District Mardan. The researchers use convenient sample for the selection of Madrassas. Selection of students is based on thirty percent proportionate sample; while teachers are selected on the basis of hundred percent proportionate samples accordingly. Two separate questionnaires are the instrument for data collection. The questionnaires comprised on both closed and open ended items. The collected data were analyzed using percentage and thematic analysis. Findings of the study revealed that there are no proper facilities for the teaching of English language. The results of this research study may be helpful for the policy makers to emphasize more on the importance of English language learning in Madrassas across Pakistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in particular.
