Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of self-efficacy, process feedback and task complexity on decisions by managers to continue or discontinue a new product after receiving negative performance feedback. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a classroom experiment design and uses logistic regression and a chi-square test to analyze the data. Findings The findings of this paper show that self-efficacy, process feedback and task complexity have not only main effects but also interactive effects on managers’ go or no-go decisions; further, the main effects are mediated by interactions. The effect of self-efficacy is moderated by process feedback and task complexity. Process feedback and task complexity also have an interactive effect on decisions about new products by decision-makers. Research limitations/implications This paper extends the theory of escalation of commitment (EOC) by showing that self-efficacy, process feedback and task complexity can influence decision-makers’ go or no-go decisions after they have received negative performance feedback. Practical implications This paper provides useful guidelines for managers on how to reduce the likelihood of EOC. Originality/value The originality and value of this paper lie in its being the first to examine the effects of process feedback and task complexity on the EOC.

The purpose of this study was to explore the self-efficacy beliefs of male professional golfers (N = 12). Three themes emerged from the qualitative analysis of interview responses. First, enactive mastery experiences were the most powerful source of self-efficacy. Second, golfers maintained high self-efficacy over time by recalling prior success, strategically framing experiences, and enlisting supportive verbal persuasions from themselves and from others. Finally, self-efficacy influenced professional golfers’ thought patterns, outcome expectations, and emotional states. Findings support and refine the theoretical tenets of Bandura’s social cognitive theory.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the relative merits of in vivo emotive imagery and performance feedback in enhancing self-efficacy beliefs and performance on a competitive muscular endurance task. College males (n=60) and females (n=60) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: mastery imagery plus feedback, feedback alone, or control condition. Subjects in the imagery-plus-feedback condition were told that one of the pair (always the subject) would receive imagery exposure while the other (always the confederate) would wait outside. Subjects performed two trials against the confederate, who always won by 10 seconds. A Group x Trials interaction for self-efficacy revealed a significant increase for the imagery group after brief exposure. Also, imagery subjects had significantly higher efficacy scores than feedback alone or control subjects after each performance trial. A Group x Trials interaction for performance indicated that imagery subjects initially had significantly longer performance times than did feedback alone or control subjects. Performance feedback alone did not influence efficacy beliefs or performance.

Self-efficacy is een robuuste voorspeller als het gaat om (gezondheids)gedrag en de theorie van self-efficacy wordt daarom vooral ingezet voor effectieve preventie. Ondanks het belang en de noodzaak van de theorie, is er in de psychologie een gebrek aan eenduidigheid van definities en operationalisaties. Er zijn in de literatuur veel verschillende constructen met (deels of geheel) dezelfde inhoud, en daartegenover worden dezelfde constructen in verschillende theorieën anders gedefinieerd. Dit geeft problemen in het trekken van conclusies, als het immers niet duidelijk is welke precieze definitie wordt aangehouden. Bovendien zijn definities van constructen die deel uitmaken van de theorie van self-efficacy, vaak te beknopt en vaag beschreven in de literatuur, zo ook de oorspronkelijke definities van de constructen van de theorie van self-efficacy. Conceptuele onduidelijkheid heeft een grote heterogeniteit aan meetinstrumenten tot gevolg. In deze thesis zijn definities van de constructen general self-efficacy, specific self-efficacy, outcome expectancy en enactive mastery experiences zo eenduidig en uitgebreid mogelijk gedefinieerd, waarbij ook de grenzen zijn afgebakend van waar de constructen niet over gaan. Bovendien zijn er instructies beschreven voor het ontwikkelen van meetinstrumenten voor de constructen. Dit alles is beschreven door middel van het format Decentralized Construct Taxonomies. Oorspronkelijke definities van de constructen bleken erg summier. Veelgebruikte meetinstrumenten voor de constructen bleken niet geheel geschikt voor de hier ontwikkelde definities, en daarom zijn in deze thesis gedetailleerde instructies beschreven voor het ontwikkelen van meetinstrumenten voor deze constructen.
