Language and cognition revisited.

This chapter concerns nonbinary genders; identities and roles between or beyond gender categories such as the binary options ‘women and men,’ for example. We review the emerging literature on people who do not identify with such binary gender schemes, unpack the often-implicit logic of thinking about others through the lens of gender binary schemes, and briefly describe some other less-researched, but longstanding cultural gender systems which recognize nonbinary genders. This chapter makes the case that consideration of nonbinary genders is germane to several core topics in psychology including identity, mental health, culture, social norms, language, and cognition.

The Right

The notion of default and override can serve linguistic analysis in different ways. In the lexicon defaults are used for the resolution of rule competition, to capture lexical blocking, to select the right stem where there are choices, and when used in inheritance systems to provide for instances that do not meet every characteristic of their class allowing exceptionality to be expressed as semi-regularity. Defaults in syntax and semantics play a more organizational, ontological role, expressing markedness in lists of features and their possible values and resolving conflicts that may arise when two sub-systems intersect. The chapters discuss how defaults and overrides can address specific linguistic phenomena, suggest an architecture of the grammar, and assess the role of morphology in language and cognition.

Language and cognition both appear in humans not in their raw form, but framed in a certain pedagogy. In his classic work on the relation between early linguistic development and early cognitive development, Vygotsky pointed out that, right from its inception in an individual's development, language couples the initially (ontogenetically and functionally) independent functions of speech and thought. He stresses that, as the child grows into a full encounter with the world of work, her own private narratives give way to an adult-mediated, non-fantasy-laden access to the public articulation of what her words really mean. Recent lexical conceptual research reaffirms Vygotsky. Current work on the multicoded nature of adult scientific use of language also indicates that understanding the child's cognitive and linguistic growth can help make sense of the multisemiotic writings of science.
