This commentary interrogates what it means for routine urban behaviours to now be replicating themselves computationally. The emergence of autonomous or artificial intelligence points to the powerful role of big data in the city, as increasingly powerful computational models are now capable of replicating and reproducing existing spatial patterns and activities. I discuss these emergent urban systems of learned or trained intelligence as being at once radical and routine. Just as the material and behavioural conditions that give rise to urban big data demand attention, so do the generative design principles of data-driven models of urban behaviour, as they are increasingly put to use in the production of replicable, autonomous urban futures.

I discuss experiences in the development of four broadband public networking projects in New York State in order to see an implication for future small or medium-sized enterprise over such public networks. The projects were funded under a state program to diffuse broadband/advanced telecommunication technologies in economically depressed areas of the state. Through the broadband networks, I critically argue characterization of next generation public network (NGPN) in reference to small medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). I identify several facets of an NGPN drawing on a longitudinal study of the network development in four New York communities. As broadband public networks diffuse, small businesses being left out of the loop. The idea of SME application and service may itself be at risk. My approach to the socio-technical challenges involved in the design and development of broadband public networks is outlined.

The concept of different levels of automation (LOAs) has been pervasive in the automation literature since its introduction by Sheridan and Verplanck. LOA taxonomies have been very useful in guiding understanding of how automation affects human cognition and performance, with several practical and theoretical benefits. Over the past several decades a wide body of research has been conducted on the impact of various LOAs on human performance, workload, and situation awareness (SA). LOA has a significant effect on operator SA and level of engagement that helps to ameliorate out-of-the-loop performance problems. Together with other aspects of system design, including adaptive automation, granularity of control, and automation interface design, LOA is a fundamental design characteristic that determines the ability of operators to provide effective oversight and interaction with system autonomy. LOA research provides a solid foundation for guiding the creation of effective human–automation interaction, which is critical for the wide range of autonomous and semiautonomous systems currently being developed across many industries.

Este trabalho apresenta uma apreciação teórica da aplicabilidade de modelos de tomada de decisão de risco como uma ferramenta para entender o comportamento de motoristas durante retomadas de controle de um veículo automatizado. O artigo se foca na relação entre o conceito de “Out of the Loop” e consciência da situação. Uma discussão metodológica é feita, e suas implicaçóes para o design de produtos é apresentada. Ao fim da discussão, este artigo conclui que o processo de acumulação de evidência em modelos de tomada de decisão possui paralelos fortes com o conceito de retomada de consciência da situação. Dito isto, modelos de acumulação de evidência podem ser tuilizados como ferramentas para entender como motoristas usam a informação para tomar decisões seguras, e esta informação pode ser reforçada no design de interfaces embarcadas. Ao fim do artigo, um modelo conceitual é apresentado como sugestão para aplicação prática da teoria proposta em dados experimentais.
