Identity Integration for Sexual-Minority Christians: An Exploratory Study

AbstractGeosocial networking applications (GSN apps) have become important socialization contexts for sexual minority men (SMM). Despite their popularity, there is limited research carried out in Latin American countries and no single previous study done in Ecuador. To fill this gap, this exploratory study described and analyzed the relationships between the sociodemographic characteristics of SMM using GSN apps, their sought and fulfilled expectations, profile shared and sought characteristics, and the evaluation of their experiences as users including their perceptions of support, and discrimination. We used an online recruited sample of 303 participants enrolled between November 2019 and January 2020. Most respondents used Grindr and reported spending up to 3 h per day using apps. Most common sought expectations were getting distracted, meeting new friends, and meeting people for sexual encounters. The least met expectation was meeting someone to build a romantic relationship with. When asked about their profiles, participants reported sharing mainly their age, photographs, and sexual role. Participants also prioritized these characteristics when looking at others’ profiles. When asked about their experiences, most reported having been discriminated against, weight being the main reason for it. Some participants also indicated having received emotional support from other users. Correlation analyses indicated significant but weak relationships among the variables. Results indicated a positive correlation between time as an active GSN app user and higher experiences of discrimination. Likewise, higher number of used apps related positively with levels of received support. These results provide information that could inform future research in the country and the region regarding GSN apps use among SMM, socialization practices, and modern dating tools.

BACKGROUND The early adolescent years are marked by pervasive self- and peer-regulation regarding gender and sexuality norms, which can affect mental wellbeing of sexual minority teens and tweens. During this developmental period, social technology use is also emerging as a dominant mode of communication with peers, allowing for both risk and resilient behaviors that can impact wellbeing. OBJECTIVE The objectives of this exploratory study was to examine how sexual minorities in middle school use social technologies, who they are connected to and for what purposes, and associations with mental wellbeing, compared to their heterosexual peers. METHODS In our cross-sectional survey study of 1034 early adolescents aged 10-16 (average age=12.7) from 4 middle school sites in the Northeast US, we conducted an exploratory study comparing sexual minorities (24% of sample) to their heterosexual peers with an 80% response rate. RESULTS Sexual minorities report having smaller networks on their favorite social media site (B=-.57, p<.001), and were less often responding positively when friends share good news (B=-.35, p=.002) and trying to make friends feel better when sharing bad news (B=-.30, p=.014). However, sexual minorities more often reported joining a group or online community to make themselves feel less alone (B=.28, p=.003) unlike heterosexual youth. Sexual minorities had higher averages of loneliness and social isolation (B=.19, p<.001) than heterosexual students. Sexual minorities were also twice as likely to have tried to harm themselves in the past (B=.81, OR=2.24, p<.001) and more likely to have symptoms that reach the CESD-based definition of depression (B=0.15, OR= 1.16, p<.001). About 39% of sexual minorities had no one to talk to about their sexual orientation. Sexual minorities were 1.5 times more likely to have joined a social media site their parents would disapprove (B=.41, OR=1.50, p=.004) and they were more likely to report seeing online videos related to self-harm (B=.33, OR=1.39, p=.016) than heterosexual youth. CONCLUSIONS Future longitudinal studies could determine any bidirectional influences of mental wellbeing and social technology use in sexual minorities during this difficult developmental period. Given prior reports of supportive and safe online spaces for sexual minority youth, our findings demonstrated that sexual minority youth prefer to maintain small, close-knit online communities (apart from their families) to express themselves, particularly when reaching out to online communities to reduce loneliness.

In this exploratory study, we examine the production of an organizational LGBT religious identity utilizing the case of DignityUSA. To this end, we engage in two interconnected analyses. First, we revisit and verify the findings of Loseke and Cavendish (2001) concerning the production of what they called a “Dignified Self,” which LGBT Catholics may use to integrate their religious-sexual-gender identities. Then, we expand on their analyses of DignityUSA in the late 1990’s to outline the ways DignityUSA constructs an organizational identity their members may draw upon to construct the Dignified Self and integrate their sexual/gender and religious identities. In so doing, our analyses speak both to (1) Loseke and Cavendish’s (2001) call to explore whether their findings from three years of newsletters held over time; and (2) calls over the past two decades for LGBT religious studies to expand beyond individual LGBT religious-sexual-gender identity integration to ascertain the construction of the organizational identities LGBT people draw upon to accomplish individual and interpersonal identity integration.

Drawing upon previous research with sexual minority Christian college students, we identify emergent themes important to ministry with sexual minorities integrating religious/spiritual and sexual identities: intrinsic religiosity, social relationships, self-acceptance, and complexity of identity integration. We propose a Trinitarian ministry model wherein the church serves as a holding environment—a discipling community intentionally designed to be relational, secure, and formational thereby creating a synergistic communal climate for identity development related to faith and sexuality.
