This chapter distills the book’s responses to two pivotal questions. If a sweeping, politically driven curtailment of fundamental liberties happens again, would the Korematsu majority’s highly deferential 1944 approach be expanded to new purposes to legitimize present-day transgressions of essential democratic liberties? Or would the courts undertake watchful care over those liberties by scrutinizing the government’s claim of necessity so that the talismanic incantation of national security itself does not enervate the judicial role? The chapter coalesces prior themes by first linking rubber-stamp judicial passivity to the deeply problematic shadow side of national security law; second by highlighting Korematsu and its coram nobis reopening as a cautionary tale; third, by repudiating Korematsu’s unconditional deference to the government’s claim of necessity; fourth by implicating judicial legitimacy in affirming Korematsu’s stated commitment to careful judicial scrutiny; and finally, by moving toward justice by breaking a key link in the chain of enduring injustice.

This study uses the archetype of a ‘trickster’ to reflect back on, and hence problematize, the role of the educator/facilitator identity in leadership learning. This is based on the view that a trickster is a permanent resident in liminal spaces and that these liminal spaces play an important role in leadership learning. Our approach was based on the reading of the trickster literature alongside reflective conversations on our own experiences of facilitation of leadership learning, development and education. We suggest that paying attention to the trickster tale draws attention to the romanticization of leadership development and its facilitation as based on a response to crisis that leads to a further enhancement of the leader as a hero. Hence, it also offers ways to problematize leadership learning by uncovering the shadow side of facilitation and underlying power relations. We therefore contribute by showing how, as facilitators, we can use the trickster archetype to think more critically, reflectively and reflexively about our role and practices as educators, in particular, the ethical and power-related issues. In our conclusions, we make recommendations for research, theory and practice and invite other facilitators to share with us their trickster tales.

The scattering of electromagnetic plane waves by triangular prism and its truncated form (the isosceles triangle and the trapezoid are transverse sections, respectively) has been studied in order to determine possibility of high field intensity (photonic jet) formation. Using high-resolution finite-difference time-domain simulation, an optimal relationship between the wavelength and the size of the prism was found to form photonic jet with sub wavelength waist on the shadow side of the prism. Truncation of the prism (with trapezoids as transverse sections) leads to an improvement in the characteristics of photonic jets (intensity, length and waist). A qualitative explanation of the simulation results obtained is presented.

Abstract While confirming Heuser and Klaus’s twenty-year-old warning about the shadow side of charismatic leadership in pentecostal organizations, the article points out the leader-centric bias in this and similar works and seeks to advance the discussion by addressing charismatic leadership from a structure/agency perspective. Drawing on Margaret Archer’s critical realist framework, the authors go beyond the focus on the sole charismatic leader to suggest that all partners in the leadership relation bear responsibility for avoiding destructive charismatic cultures and promoting ethical agency. The study proposes that it is possible to have forms of charismatic leadership that reflect pentecostal characteristics without being destructive if organizations promote reflexivity, ethical policies and moral accountability, and active followership.
