Archaea are best known in their capacities as extremophiles, i.e. micro-organisms able to thrive in some of the most drastic environments on Earth. The protein-based surface layer that envelopes many archaeal strains must thus correctly assemble and maintain its structural integrity in the face of the physical challenges associated with, for instance, life in high salinity, at elevated temperatures or in acidic surroundings. Study of archaeal surface-layer (glyco)proteins has thus offered insight into the strategies employed by these proteins to survive direct contact with extreme environments, yet has also served to elucidate other aspects of archaeal protein biosynthesis, including glycosylation, lipid modification and protein export. In this mini-review, recent advances in the study of archaeal surface-layer (glyco)proteins are discussed.

Caregivers of patients with advanced disease can be seen as both care providers and as receivers of care. Family caregivers frequently face a wide range of their own psychological, spiritual, social, financial, and physical challenges, which may increase in duration due to longer survival and more ambulatory and home care of patients with advanced disease. While support for family caregivers is an integral component of quality palliative care, such support is often unavailable and there is a dearth of evidence-based interventions for caregivers. This chapter will provide an overview of the common issues faced by family caregivers of adults in palliative care, the factors that contribute to or exacerbate these problems, the interventions designed to address them and their supporting evidence, and the potential for personal growth in caregivers. Gaps in clinical practice and research are identified and future directions for clinical attention and research are discussed.

Ballet has come to be an important part of girl culture, in part because so many girls in the United States take ballet at some point in their lives. Consumer products like dolls and music boxes have brought ballet into girls’ homes and reinforce a problematic link between ballet and femininity, though real girls who take ballet class are often quite thoughtful about the way ballet empowers them. Books for children, both non-fiction and fiction, have been important examples of the intersection between ballet and girl culture since the early twentieth century. Children’s ballet books deal with artistic expression, physical challenges, competition, gender, sexuality, racial and ethnic diversity, class barriers, and many other elements of real girls’ experiences with ballet class.

Substance use, often in combination with sex, referred to as “party and play (PNP),” defines lives of gay men across generations and across all stages of life. Alcohol and drug use among gay men is precipitated by psychosocial burdens such as loneliness and diminished self-worth, the mental health difficulties experienced within the population, and the physical challenges associated with sex itself. The reliance on drug use is catalyzed by the homophobia of American society, but is also normalized within the community itself. The use of alcohol and other drugs also is intimately linked to the expectations of masculinity within the gay population, the drive for physical and sexual perfection, and the racism and discrimination experienced by gay men both within and outside the gay community. Ultimately, drugs serve as facilitators for the fantastical sex sought by many gay men and thus use of noninjection drugs that are hypersexualizing, such as methamphetamine and inhalant nitrates, has been implicated in the ongoing presence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the gay population.

In modern medicine, approaches to healthcare no longer only encompass injury management, but increasingly focus on understanding the performance demands and health risk exposures faced by performing artists. Quantitative and qualitative scientific and health analyses by performing artists, clinicians, educators, and researchers are increasingly helping us to develop effective, targeted, and relevant health promotion and performance optimisation strategies worldwide. While such research increasingly identifies improved methods of preventing and managing potential psychological, audiological, or physical challenges faced by performing artists, we still need to work hard to address very important barriers to implementing appropriate health approaches. One of the challenges to better health management in performing arts populations relates to stigmatization.

Performing musicians face a number of physical, social, and psychological challenges that must be mastered if their musical career is to be both rewarding and sustainable. However, musicians are at high risk of physical and psychological strain and injury in the execution of their art. Physical and psychological stressors exert reciprocal and synergistic effects on the musician, and careful analysis of the intrinsic characteristics of the performer and the extrinsic demands on the musician must be made in order to develop appropriate interventions. This article provides an overview of the risks and challenges facing musicians, with the aim of developing awareness and understanding of how to prevent and manage these challenges. It is divided into two sections: physical challenges and psychological challenges, focusing on music-performance anxiety. Each section outlines the key issues and then provides an overview of evidence-based treatment.
