In this paper, we developed a practical approach for automatic detection of discrimination actions from social images. Firstly, an image set is established, in which various discrimination actions and relations are manually labeled. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to create a dataset for discrimination action recognition and relationship identification. Secondly, a practical approach is developed to achieve automatic detection and identification of discrimination actions and relationships from social images. Thirdly, the task of relationship identification is seamlessly integrated with the task of discrimination action recognition into one single network called the Co-operative Visual Translation Embedding++ network (CVTransE++). We also compared our proposed method with numerous state-of-the-art methods, and our experimental results demonstrated that our proposed methods can significantly outperform state-of-the-art approaches.

Recent decades have seen an increase in women’s employment rates and an expansion of egalitarian values. Previous studies document the so-called “motherhood penalty,” which makes women’s employment more difficult. Demands for greater shared child-rearing between parents are hindered by a normative climate that supports differentiated gender roles in the family. Using data from the Center for Sociological Research [Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas] (2018), this study shows that the Spanish population perceives that differentiated social images of motherhood and fatherhood still persist. The “sexual division in parenting” index is proposed and the profile of the individuals who most perceive this sexual division is analyzed. The results show that women and younger people are the most aware of this social normativity that unequally distributes child care, making co-responsibility difficult. The political implications of these results are discussed.

AbstractIn this study we investigate whether persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) perceive social images differently than control participants (CON) in a graded perception task in which stimuli emerged from noise before dissipating into noise again. We presented either social stimuli (humans) or non-social stimuli (objects or animals). ASD were slower to recognize images during their emergence, but as fast as CON when indicating the dissipation of the image irrespective of its content. Social stimuli were recognized faster and remained discernable longer in both diagnostic groups. Thus, ASD participants show a largely intact preference for the processing of social images. An exploratory analysis of response subsets reveals subtle differences between groups that could be investigated in future studies.

What do “threats” look like in the Global South in tagged social imagery, and what can these respective imagesets suggest about (1) formal outreaches to the broader publics by strategic messengers, (2) public awareness of such threats and their potential response role, and (3) the apparent (root) causes of these threats and possible risk mitigations? Are there visual differences in the senses of threat to the Global South as compared to the world? Finally, global and national-level frameworks about global threats were captured from international and national entities and used to recode the selected social images in a top-down way and to understand if there are gaps in social image representations about threats in the Global South and what these gaps may mean in public awareness of threats and preparedness.
