This case study shows how Dramatherapy can engage clients with communication difficulties, which exclude them from standard mental health pathways in early intervention in psychosis services. Deliberately prioritising the client’s newfound modes of expression to shape the narrative within, it is evident Dramatherapy processes; embodiment, projection and role enabled this client to create and then inhabit his own playful metaphors. These metaphors continued to facilitate every-day life challenges. During his Dramatherapy relationship, the client within this case study transitioned from supported accommodation to his own property, progressed to residential rehabilitation for alcohol misuse and finally engaged in cognitive behavioural therapy. From feedback interviews we know he continued to create and use his own protective metaphors 10 months after drama therapy ended. He returned to education as part of his plan to seek appropriate employment and was discharged to his GP.

Societies are undergoing an intensive process of transformation, and the role that religion plays in guiding such rapid changes remains underexplored. In recent decades, postmodern discourse has hindered the attractiveness of involvement in religious affairs and reading sacred books, highlighting how “uncool” and useless these practices are in responding to current daily life challenges. Decades of research have evidenced the positive impact of reading the most precious universal literary creations. Since sacred books are considered universal texts, this study explores the potential of dialogic interreligious gatherings (DIGs) focused on sacred books to enhance the attractiveness of key values such as love, kindness, humility, and generosity. These spaces are grounded in strong principles that guarantee the freedom of participants. This context opens up a possibility of discussing sacred books in a dialogic and egalitarian space where everyone’s voice is heard. In this context, especially in times where freedom is jeopardized in many spheres, believers from different faiths and nonbelievers engage in dialogues and relate sacred book content to their personal experiences and current social challenges. The communicative analysis conducted shows that DIGs drive the attractiveness of fundamental values present in sacred books, creating possibilities to enhance their effects in spurring personal and social change.

Abstract This symposium takes an interdisciplinary perspective in order to address psychological and behavioral benefits of various arts-based programs for older adults including persons living with dementia. Presenters in this symposium specialize in diverse disciplines including psychology, social work, cognitive neuroscience, education, and sociology. Using novel approaches and various research methods, the presenters will speak to the specific outcomes of arts-based interventions. The positive outcomes include: 1) improved cognitive health rediscovered identities among cognitively normal older adults; and 2) better communication and reduced agitation for persons with dementia. The first two presentations concern cognitively intact participants. Brown will present a mixed-methods study that examined cognitive benefits and differential experiences of 11 older adults who participated in a 12-week, arts-based intervention. Chow will identify the themes in the ‘Tree of Life’ drawings of 144 Hong Kong Chinese older adults, who re-authored their sense of self transcending life challenges. Next, Mohan will discuss results from an analysis of communication exchanges among 6 older participants in a 6-week, creative group storytelling program (TimeSlips) offered in a memory care community. Halpin-Healy will explain the research-based practices used in museum programming (Arts & Minds) for persons with dementia and their care partners. She will summarize the assessments of the programs that have served approximately 500 participants over a decade. As a discussant, Kim will summarize common threads that lead to effective arts-based interventions for older adults regardless of their cognitive status. She will also highlight implications regarding the benefits of arts-based interventions in late life development.

This study aimed to describe the experiences of patients with COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care units (ICU). The data were analyzed by content analysis on 16 ICU patients with COVID-19. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews. Three categories were identified: (a) captured by a challenging incident with subcategories: perceived sudden and challenging death, fear of carelessness in overcrowding, worry about the family, and frustration with stigmatizing; (b) the flourishing of life with subcategories: spiritual-awakening, resilience in the face of life challenges, promoting health behaviors, and striving for recovery; and (c) honoring the blessings with subcategories: understanding the importance of nurses, realizing the value of family, and realizing the value of altruism. COVID-19 survivors experienced both positive and negative experiences. The results of this study could help health care providers identify the needs of ICU patients with COVID-19, including psychological, social, and spiritual support and design care models.

Usability has been an essential component of the Web User Experience (UX) and a focal research topic. In recent years, the penetration of interactive technologies in all aspects of everyday life challenges the way UX is understood and designed. The past decade, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) scholars have been continuously attempting to introduce and explore new and non-traditional factors in the UX arena, such as aesthetics, emotions, affect, and trust. This study contributes to the field by exploring the relationship between aesthetics and UX; specifically the impact of the classical design element of white space on the perceived attractiveness and perceived usability of an e-commerce website. A between-subject research design involves the manipulation a website’s white space. Three different versions were constructed using 25, 50 and 75% of the white space, respectively. Findings offer support for the relationship between aesthetics and the perceived usability of a website. The study results suggest that the usability of a website is impacted negatively when white space increases over 50%. Practitioners should consider that in the context of eCommerce Web design, reduction of content and shrinking of visual elements, in favor of white space, is likely to negatively impact the usability of a website.

ABSTRACT Background  The Doris and Howard Hiatt Residency in Global Health Equity and Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital provides global health training during residency, but little is known about its effect on participants' selection of a global health career. Objective  We assessed the perceptions of residency graduates from the first 7 classes to better understand the outcomes of this education program, and the challenges faced by participants. Methods  We interviewed 27 of 31 physicians (87%) who graduated from the program between 2003 and 2013 using a convergent mixed-methods design and a structured interview tool that included both open-ended and forced-choice questions. We independently coded and analyzed qualitative data using a case study design, and then wove together the qualitative and quantitative data at the interpretation phase using a parallel convergent mixed-methods design. Results  Entering a career focused on social justice was cited as the most common motivator for selecting to train in global health. Most respondents (83%, 20 of 24) reported they were able to achieve this goal despite structural barriers, such as lower salaries compared with peers, a lack of mentors in the field, poorly structured and undersupported career pathways at their institutions, and unique work-life challenges. Conclusions  A majority of graduates from 1 dedicated residency program in global health and internal medicine reported they were able to continue to engage in global health activities after graduation and, despite identified challenges, reported that they planned long-term careers in global health.
