The second phase of obtaining deep reflection data in the Rio Grande rift area of New Mexico in the vicinity of Socorro, New Mexico, has been completed and the data are available for the cost of reproduction of the displays and magnetic tape reels. This operation, the application of sophisticated continuous seismic reflection techniques to the solution of geologic problems in the lower crust and upper mantle of the earth, was conducted by the Consortium for Continental Reflection Profiling (COCORP) as part of the U.S. Geodynamics Project. It was sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences and funded by the National Science Foundation. The executive committee of the Consortium consists of members from Cornell University, the University of Houston, Princeton University, the University of Wisconsin, and Shell Oil Co. Cornell University has the operational responsibility.

This work presents the results of a high-resolution seismic reflection data survey carried out in the Patos lagoon inlet, near Rio Grande the southernmost harbor of Brazil. The analysis of the reflection patterns reveals the presence of transgressive/regressive barrier structures and beach/foredune-ridges. The mapping of these barrier structures allows a better understanding of the geological evolution of the Patos lagoon system during the Quaternary period and also helps to understand the evolution and migration of the actual lagoonal inlet between the Patos lagoon and Atlantic Ocean.
