AbstractThe Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean is the world’s main production site of Antarctic Bottom Water, a water-mass that is ventilated at the ocean surface before sinking and entraining older water-masses—ultimately replenishing the abyssal global ocean. In recent decades, numerous attempts at estimating the rates of ventilation and overturning of Antarctic Bottom Water in this region have led to a strikingly broad range of results, with water transport-based calculations (8.4–9.7 Sv) yielding larger rates than tracer-based estimates (3.7–4.9 Sv). Here, we reconcile these conflicting views by integrating transport- and tracer-based estimates within a common analytical framework, in which bottom water formation processes are explicitly quantified. We show that the layer of Antarctic Bottom Water denser than 28.36 kg m$$^{-3}$$ - 3 $$\gamma _{n}$$ γ n is exported northward at a rate of 8.4 ± 0.7 Sv, composed of 4.5 ± 0.3 Sv of well-ventilated Dense Shelf Water, and 3.9 ± 0.5 Sv of old Circumpolar Deep Water entrained into cascading plumes. The majority, but not all, of the Dense Shelf Water (3.4 ± 0.6 Sv) is generated on the continental shelves of the Weddell Sea. Only 55% of AABW exported from the region is well ventilated and thus draws down heat and carbon into the deep ocean. Our findings unify traditionally contrasting views of Antarctic Bottom Water production in the Atlantic sector, and define a baseline, process-discerning target for its realistic representation in climate models.

Abstract. The distribution of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and carbon (DOC) in sediment porewaters was determined at nine locations along the St. Lawrence estuary and in the gulf of St. Lawrence. In a previous manuscript (Alkhatib et al., 2012a), we have shown that this study area is characterized by gradients in the sedimentary particulate organic matter (POM) reactivity, bottom water oxygen concentrations, and benthic respiration rates. Based on the porewater profiles, we estimated the benthic diffusive fluxes of DON and DOC in the same area. Our results show that DON fluxed out of the sediments at significant rates (110 to 430 μmol m−2 d−1). DON fluxes were positively correlated with sedimentary POM reactivity and varied inversely with sediment oxygen exposure time (OET), suggesting direct links between POM quality, aerobic remineralization and the release of DON to the water column. DON fluxes were on the order of 30 to 64% of the total benthic inorganic fixed N loss due to denitrification, and often exceeded the diffusive nitrate fluxes into the sediments. Hence they represented a large fraction of the total benthic N exchange, a result that is particularly important in light of the fact that DON fluxes are usually not accounted for in estuarine and coastal zone nutrient budgets. In contrast to DON, DOC fluxes out of the sediments did not show any significant spatial variation along the Laurentian Channel (LC) between the estuary and the gulf (2100 ± 100 μmol m−2 d−1). The molar C / N ratio of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in porewater and the overlying bottom water varied significantly along the transect, with lowest C / N in the lower estuary (5–6) and highest C / N (> 10) in the gulf. Large differences between the C / N ratios of porewater DOM and POM are mainly attributed to a combination of selective POM hydrolysis and elemental fractionation during subsequent DOM mineralization, but selective adsorption of DOM to mineral phases could not be excluded as a potential C / N fractionating process. The extent of this C- versus N- element partitioning seems to be linked to POM reactivity and redox conditions in the sediment porewaters. Our results thus highlight the variable effects selective organic matter (OM) preservation can have on bulk sedimentary C / N ratios, decoupling the primary source C / N signatures from those in sedimentary paleoenvironmental archives. Our study further underscores that the role of estuarine sediments as efficient sinks of bioavailable nitrogen is strongly influenced by the release of DON during early diagenetic reactions, and that DON fluxes from continental margin sediments represent an important internal source of N to the ocean.

Macroinvertebrates are widespread in lake sediments and alter sedimentary properties through their activity (bioturbation). Understanding the interactions between bioturbation and sediment properties is important given that lakes are important sinks and sources of carbon and nutrients. We studied the biogeochemical impact of macrofauna on surface sediments in 3-month-long mesocosm experiments conducted using sediment cores from a hypoxic, macrofauna-free lake basin. Experimental units consisted of hypoxic controls, oxic treatments, and oxic treatments that were experimentally colonized with chironomid larvae or tubificid worms. Overall, the presence of O2 in bottom water had the strongest geochemical effect and led to oxidation of sediments down to 2 cm depth. Relative to macrofauna-free oxic treatments, chironomid larvae increased sediment pore water concentrations of nitrate and sulfate and lowered porewater concentrations of reduced metals (Fe2+, Mn2+), presumably by burrow ventilation, whereas tubificid worms increased the redox potential, possibly through sediment reworking. Microbial communities were very similar across oxic treatments; however, the fractions of α-, β-, and γ-Proteobacteria and Sphingobacteriia increased, whereas those of Actinobacteria, Planctomycetes, and Omnitrophica decreased compared to hypoxic controls. Sediment microbial communities were, moreover, distinct from those of macrofaunal tubes or feces. We suggest that, under the conditions studied, bottom water oxygenation has a stronger biogeochemical impact on lacustrine surface sediments than macrofaunal bioturbation.

AbstractX oilfield is a typical sandstone reservoir with big bottom water in the Bohai Sea. The viscosity of crude oil ranges from 30 to 425 cp. Single sand development with the horizontal well is adopted. At present, the water content is as high as 96%. The water cut of the production well is stable for a long time in the high water cut period. The recoverable reserves calculated by conventional methods have gradually increased, and even the partial recovery has exceeded the predicted recovery rate. This study carried out an oil displacement efficiency experiment under big water drive multiple to accurately understand an extensive bottom water reservoir's production law in an ultra-high water cut stage. It comprehensively used the scanning electron microscope date, casting thin section, oil displacement experiment, and production performance to analyze the change law of physical properties and relative permeability curve from the aspects of reservoir clay minerals, median particle size, pore distribution, and pore throat characteristics. Therefore, the development law of horizontal production wells in sandstone reservoirs with big bottom water is understood. It evaluates the ultimate recovery of sandstone reservoirs with big bottom water. It provides a fundamental theoretical basis and guidance for dynamic prediction and delicate potential tapping of sandstone reservoirs with big bottom water at a high water cut stage.

AbstractThe water flooding characteristic curve method is one of the essential techniques to predict recoverable reserves. However, the recoverable reserves indicated by the existing water flooding characteristic curves of low-amplitude reservoirs with strong bottom water increase gradually, and the current local recovery degree of some areas has exceeded the predicted recovery rate. The applicability of the existing water flooding characteristic curves in low-amplitude reservoirs with strong bottom water is lacking, which affects the accurate prediction of development performance. By analyzing the derivation process of the conventional water flooding characteristic curve method, this manuscript finds out the reasons for the poor applicability of the existing water flooding characteristic curve in low-amplitude reservoir with strong bottom water and corrects the existing water flooding characteristic curve according to the actual situation of the oilfield and obtains the improvement method of water flooding characteristic curve in low-amplitude reservoir with strong bottom water. After correction, the correlation coefficient between $$\frac{{k_{ro} }}{{k_{rw} }}$$ k ro k rw and $$S_{w}$$ S w is 95.92%. According to the comparison between the actual data and the calculated data, in 2021/3, the actual water cut is 97.29%, the water cut predicted by the formula is 97.27%, the actual cumulative oil production is 31.19 × 104t, and the predicted cumulative oil production is 31.31 × 104t. The predicted value is consistent with the actual value. It provides a more reliable method for predicting low-amplitude reservoirs' recoverable ability with strong bottom water and guides the oilfield's subsequent decision-making.
