Objectives: Personalized music playlists are increasingly being utilized in aged care settings. This study aims to investigate how musical features influence the affective response to music of people with probable dementia. Methods: A factorial experiment (2 × 2 × 3) was conducted to investigate the influence of tempo (fast, slow), mode (major, minor), and lyrics (none, negative, positive). Ninety-nine people with probable dementia were randomly assigned to 3 conditions, listening to 3 personalized playlists. Galvanic skin response and activation of facial action units were measured. Results: Music with fast tempos increased arousal and reduced enjoyment. Music in minor keys increased activation of the depressor anguli oris, suggesting increased sadness. Lyrics had no significant effect on response. Discussion: The findings demonstrate that both tempo and mode influenced the response of the listener. As well as accounting for personal preferences, music for people with dementia should be carefully targeted toward the affective outcome desired.

Urban railway transport that connects suburbs and city areas is characterized by uneven temporal and spatial distribution in terms of passenger flow and underutilized carrying capacity. This paper aims to develop methodologies to measure the carrying capacity of the urban railway by introducing a concept of the express-slow mode. We first explore factors influencing the carrying capacity under the express-slow mode and the interactive relationships among these factors. Then we establish seven different scenarios to measure the carrying capacity by considering the ratio of the number of the express trains and the slow trains, the station where overtaking takes place, and the number of overtaking maneuvers. Taking Shanghai Metro Line 16 as an empirical study, the proposed methods to measure the carrying capacity under different express-slow mode are proved to be valid. This paper contributes to the literature by remodifying the traditional methods to measure the carrying capacity when different express-slow modes are applied to improve the carrying capacity of the suburban railway.

AbstractStructural and dynamical properties of an aqueous gelatin solution (5 wt%, 0.1M NaCi, pH=7) in a sol-gel transition were studied by time-resolved small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) after quenching the gelatin sol at ∼45”C to 11°C. SAXS intensity measurements suggested the presence of gel fibrils which grew initially in cross-section. The average cross-section of the gel fibrils reached a constant value after an initial growth period of ∼800 sec. Further increase in SAXS intensity could be attributed to the increase in the length of the gel fibrils. Photon correlation, on the other hand, clearly showed two relaxation modes in both the sol and the gel (∼1 hr after the quenching process) states: a fast cooperative diffusion mode which remained constant from the sol to the gel state after correction for the temperature dependence of solvent viscosity; and a slow mode that could be attributed to the self-diffusion of the “free” gelatin chains and aggregates. The slow mode contribution to the time correlation function was reduced from ∼40% in sol to ∼20% in gel signaling a decrease but not the elimination of “free” particles in the gel network. The decrease in the intensity contribution by the slow mode is, however, accompanied by a large increase in the characteristic line-width distribution.

In a layer of magnetic field aligned current, waves corresonding to the slow mode in the limit of no current are absorbed and/or reflected as soon as they enter the layer, while, under certain conditions, the waves corresponding to the fast mode do propagate through the layer.

We propose a structure of 2D photonic crystal waveguide composed of hexagonal lattices of air holes in high index materials. Frozen mode regime can be observed within the photonic band gap. Light incident into the waveguide is coupled into two modes. One mode has enhanced amplitude and the other one has slow group velocity. Finite-different time-domain (FDTD) simulation is used to demonstrate the propagation of the slow mode.
