Abstract. We present the results of a case study of quasi-periodic (QP) ELF/VLF hiss emissions detected on board the Freja and Magion 5 satellites. Detailed analysis of available QP events revealed certain specific features of their dynamic spectra, which have not been reported earlier. In particular, we found an event with an increase in the frequency drift rate during the generation of a single element of QP emission, and an event with alteration of QP elements having different frequency drift rates. Another event demonstrates the possible relationship between QP hiss emissions and discrete VLF emissions. Properties of QP events are compared with parameters of energetic electrons and cold plasma, and other available data. Possible scenarios for the formation of these emissions are discussed on the basis of self-consistent simulations of the cyclotron instability, employing the information obtained experimentally. It is shown that the generation regime of self-sustained pulsations can explain consistently our data set. We show that our numerical model is capable of explaining the mentioned specific features of the dynamic spectrum of QP emissions. Comparison of the modeling results with experimental data yields an estimate for the parameters not measured directly. Key words. <p>My research begins with an investigation into existing public space to reveal its appropriation and determinants to determine if the site is successful or not. These findings will inform the design research through introducing small interventions which create new site qualities.  This research aims to find what influences use and appropriation within public space. Observations of the determinants and qualities of different sites, will lead to the identification of key aspects, the discoverings will be analysed to determine what makes a public space successful or unsuccessful.  The objective is to use these discoveries to introduce a change in the design process through developing ideas that amplify the surrounding existing environment/ structures.  I aim to use designed and non-designed elements that reconfigure the way users manipulate space. I was offered an opportunity to work with a kindergarten (Awatea Kindergarten) as a case study to test my findings.  Findings from the design research highlight how the introduction of new elements into a space, can reconfigure the existing area and amplify those existing natural elements into the design.</p>

AbstractUsing interviews with former militants and previously unpublished documents, this article traces the genesis and internal dynamics of the Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (People's Revolutionary Army, ERP) in El Salvador during the early years of its existence (1970–6). This period was marked by the inability of the ERP to maintain internal coherence or any consensus on revolutionary strategy, which led to a series of splits and internal fights over control of the organisation. The evidence marshalled in this case study sheds new light on the origins of the armed Salvadorean Left and thus contributes to a wider understanding of the processes of formation and internal dynamics of armed left-wing groups that emerged from the 1960s onwards in Latin America.

Abstract Culture shapes our basic sensory experience of the world. This is particularly striking in the study of religion and psychosis, where we and others have shown that cultural context determines both the structure and content of hallucination-like events. The cultural shaping of hallucinations may provide a rich case-study for linking cultural learning with emerging prediction-based models of perception.

Abstract Hoerl and McCormack demonstrate that although animals possess a sophisticated temporal updating system, there is no evidence that they also possess a temporal reasoning system. This important case study is directly related to the broader claim that although animals are manifestly capable of first-order (perceptually-based) relational reasoning, they lack the capacity for higher-order, role-based relational reasoning. We argue this distinction applies to all domains of cognition.
